Hello all, although this is a quite old thread, unfortunately it is still up to date! I mean, with the Access Connections Service on you get a long boot time but with the service off you get an ever longer boot time! Clearly something waits there to timeout (no disk or CPU activity). What would be g...

I've successfully completed the above. Unfortunately (?) the fan was very clean. No blocks of dust or anything. I'm guessing the extra ram module (1GB) and the PCMCIA card, constantly o, may cause it to heat up. So... plan B. I'll try to get some Arctic Silver and apply it between the cooler and the...

Hardware Operation: Cleaning FAN
Hi. I'm thinking about removing the keyboard on my R50e to check if the FAN needs cleaning. It may be my idea but I think it is running a little more often than when I purchased my laptop, a few months ago. So I want to see if there's any accumulated dust blocking the air way. Has anyone done anythi...

Same here. No luck :( I have to note that I had such problems when using a Linksys WRT54G as an Access Point but NOT when using a DLink DWL900+. Also, tried upgrading to the latest version but although it fixes this one, another "bug" comes forward: when using dhcp, the gateway is set by default to ...

There's a little detail here: the Thinkpad did NOT catch fire, its battery DID. Heavy titles like that sell newspapers / attract web clicks but the truth is the battery is the part that failed. Whether it was some noname ventor or a Sony (like the ones on the Dell and Apple laptop that caught on fir...

ThinkVantage AccessConnections IP Override Problem
Hi. I've recently updated my IBM AccessConnections to ThinkVantage AccessConnections and I have this problem: I've selected in the advanced settings of a wireless profile to receive ip address via dhcp but to override the default gateway with one of my own (let's say 192.168.1.10). The problem is Ac...

Nowadays there are so many types (ultra-portable, portable, desktop-replacement) and brands that's is not a question of where but who. Who owns what. Software Installer Downloaded Files Clean Up
Hi. I have recently noticed that my IBMTOOLS folder is 1,47GB and my DRIVERS folder is abou 47MB. I understand that these folders contain drivers and software updates for the Thinkpad Utilities. I also believe that they are installation packages that are no longer necessary. Is that true? Is there a...

R50E LCD: Grey smugges at bottom corners.
Hi all. I noticed today that there are barely noticeable grey smugges at the LCD bottom corners. I am not very sure if they have just appeared or if they were there from the beginning. Is this normal for an LCD? Their size is about the size of my mouse pointer. Or maybe my eyes are playing tricks on...

Hi all. I have an IBM R50e and have installed for almost three months an extra memory module (Kingston 1GB). Although I cannot recall its speed and type, I am certain it is compatible with the factory-memory module (512MB) and my type of computer. Here's the deal: IBM Memory Test (On boot I press th...

It's clearly a software (OS to be exact) problem. I could say many bad things about Windows right now but there's no point. To me (R50e) happened quite a few times when I had a USB External Storage Device connected. Also the fact that "restore" fixed it (along with its appearance at logon screen) pr...

Then it is quite possible (99%) that there is an active process (you use Windows right? :P ) that prevents the system from suspending. Try starting windows with all Startup items disabled (msconfig) and attempting to go into standby. For example if I am running vmware and try to standby, it won't le...

Maybe your laptop takes too long to go to stand by so you get anxious, open the lid and after a while it suspends. Here's a tip (mostly diagnostic): Go to Power Options Properties > Beeps/Alarms and enable "Lid close action beep". That way, when you close the lid, your laptop will beep until it goes...

... The problem is that Windows has some "technologies" such as prefetch (Start->Run->"prefetch") that as the days go by will make your boot slower and slower (possible solution: clean up prefetch once a month or so). Myth . Previously discussed into the dirt here in a BOOTVIS thread, with referenc...

I believe the question here is if it is worth to make the transition to Vista. For some that may mean hardware upgrade, for others settings & preferences migration. My opinion is that if you are happy (or just "doing ok") with your computer (here: thinkpad) and Windows XP stick with it and don't try...

The problem starts with the slow (mine 4500 rpm) hard disks. During boot, Windows (and any other OS) copies data from the hd to the (empty) RAM. So the less you copy, the faster you're gonna see the Login Screen. The problem is that Windows has some "technologies" such as prefetch (Start->Run->"pref...

Well there is a solution to this "unfortunate" event: * use "regedit" to open your registry files. * locate HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{29F458BE-8866-11D5-A3DD-00B0D0F3BAA7}\LocalServer32 * replace the "default" value with anything (e.g. "abc") * close the registry files. This will prevent Thunderbird ...

Hi all. I have an R50e with 512 DDR PC2700 and want to add another SO-DIMM to increase its capabilities. Corsair 1GB PC2700 seems like a good idea.
