WTB: Core 2 Quad

#1 Post by Bibin » Sun Sep 07, 2014 1:40 am

I'm looking for a Core 2 Quad CPU. Preferably a Q9550 or something similar, the 1333MHz FSB ones with a huge heap of L2 Cache.

Clarification: I am referring to a Desktop LGA 775 processor.

He is looking for a desktop socket 775 processor, not a laptop socket P processor.
Four 15" T61 Frankenpads collecting dust and one X62 that sees no use, but X201 and X230 in service.

Perhaps the OP should clarify here because this is a "thinkpad" forum so one would assume he wants a cpu for a thinkpad, not a desktop, if so Brad's cpu would be ideal. I got one for my W700, it was a great deal, shipped promptly and I think you'd be hardpressed to find anyone who was not thrilled with anything they got from Brad. Plus the QX9300 is a core2 quad extreme, which has an unlocked multiplier. The Q9550 is a Core2 Quad, desktop cpu with a LGA (land grid array) socket (no pins).

The QX9300 is the fastest core2 chip available for thinkpads if I'm not mistaken and considering it's an unlocked cpu you have to be careful where you get one, you definitely don't want one that's been used by someone who overclocks for sport (pushing them well beyond design limits until they become unstable just for bragging rights then dumped at auction. The one I got from Brad was a Lenovo refurb chip so I'm certain it's been well tested and sourced from returning corporated leased equipment. It shipped quickly and was in the lenovo packaging.

ps. to the OP, good luck in your quest.

TuuS is a reliable and fair forum member who always offers great advice along with his outstanding values in ThinkPad wares.

Thanks for the kind words.

If I run across the requested CPU I will be happy to let the OP know.

When someone says they're looking for "a Q9550 or similar", what additional clarification does one need?
Thinkpad 25 (20K7), T490 (20N3), Yoga 14 (20FY), T430s (IPS FHD + Classic Keyboard), X220 4291-4BG

Since the obvious assumption to someone who wasn't familiar with this model or what is "similar" would be that it's for a thinkpad, I'd say...

LGA 775 socket
desktop cpu

I researched it so I could determine what kind of laptop uses these chips so I could find him one and was confused when it appeared to be a desktop cpu.

I agree. If one isn't familiar with CPU model codes, just spend a couple seconds to look up "Q9550". Search engines have been around for two decades; it's amazing that some people still don't know what they are for.

I've updated the post for clarification. I figured plenty of people around here would have old desktop PCs lying about so it's not totally out of place, but I should have made it clear which socket I was looking for.
