problem burning cds with the usb 2.0 Portable Multi-Burner
Hi guys,
I recently reinstalled my laptop (Thinkpad x31 2673Y13) and everything was going just fine, all my drivers installed, done all of my updates, just like a charm. Today I wanted to burn an audio cd for my education and every single program I try doesn't burn!
I tested the drivers, uninstalled them and reinstalled them, the laptop detects it properly i think, it does play audio cds, but doesn't burn em! When I try to burn in wmplayer it says 'connect burner and restart' in itunes it gives me a similar error 'failed to burn etc..'
The burner doesn't even start and the discs stay unharmed, i tried it with many fresh, new cdr's. I used to be able to write dvd's and Cd's with this little external drive so I don't think it has broken since. I have been looking for drivers for this external burner, but can't find 'em anywhere!
The only thing that does make me suspicious of some faulty setting is the fact that the drive shows up as D: cd-rom. While it is actually a multi burner (cd & dvd) I have been goin kind of crazy trying to get it to work, and I usually succeed in doing so, but now i really can't figure it out.
Oh forgot to mention; when trying to burn in itunes i had the choice between the e: drive and the d: drive (both usb2 ibm multiburner descripted), when i selected e: it couldn't detect that drive and proposed burning it with the d: drive. The same error message showed up and afterwards the choice between both drives disappeared and I had to select the d:, and of course that did nt work either!
Is there some thinkpad-guru out there who is able to help me out?! Your help will be appreciated with tons of karma!
cheers
Carlos

XP does show DVDRWs as CD-ROMs. Perhaps as a place to start you could test the drive on another PC? You could try to fire up PC-Doctor or System Toolbox to see if that tells you anything.

You can also try downloading DVDInfoPro HD v4.79 from here: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cd_dv ... nfopro.cfm
and that program can give you details of the drive's capabilities.

Re: problem burning cds with the usb 2.0 Portable Multi-Burner
Okay I noticed something when using system toolbox for the first time ever. When trying to test the cd/dvd-rw drive I could only test dvd-r &rw's. The information told me that this drive was only capable of burning dvd-r's and dvd-rw's. This used to not be the case, and I don't really have any empty dvd's at home so I can't really check it out either.. Anyone who might have a clue?

Okay I guess this mistery remains unsolved I was planning on buying a macbook pro, so I'll just do that
Re: problem burning cds with the usb 2.0 Portable Multi-Burner
Hi,
Insufficient power supplied to the DVD burner may be the source of the problem. Try to connect an external power adapter (if your drive accepts this kind of connection) or you can use a seperate USB power cable.
Take care...
