Hi, new here so apologies if this post is in the wrong section.

My sons T42 ThinkPad series 2373 recently suffered the BSOD as I had Windows XP Pro disc available, I installed this onto the T42. But he's now got no internet connection due to drivers missing. I have had a search of the Lenovo website and have downloaded and installed numerous drivers, but none of them seem to work.

In Device Manager there is a ? against:

Other devices
? Biometric Coprocessor
? Ethernet Controller
? Multimedia Audio Controller
? Network Controller
? PCI Modem
? Unknown Device
? Video Controller (VGA Compatible)

Wonder if someone could point me in the right direction to find these missing drivers.

Thanks in Advance

L Mac

Welcome to the forum!

In principle you ought to be able to find all the required drives yourself at the Drivers and software - ThinkPad T42, T42p page. Alternatively, you may use the automatic tool Lenovo ThinkVantage System Update (there's a direct download --> here).

NB: You will need Microsoft .NET Framework installed in order to run the System Update.

Thank you for both, The Welcome and the link.

However I have visited that page over and over, and downloaded a number of what I thought were the correct drivers, none of which worked!

Not being the greatest of computer users, it is no doubt me. Therefore if possible could you be more specific in what I need to download from the Lenovo website.

Once again thanks for your help with this.

Well, first: Did you actually follow my humble suggestion to try download and install the System Update that I very precisely pointed you to? Or did you choose to simply, well, skip this friendly advice?

Second: Please provide us with the exact model/type of your (son's) T42; the model = 2373 (you've already told), but what's the model... that's a three-letter/digit combination, e.g. N1U, 4WU or something. You will find this information either on the label attached at the bottom of the laptop and/or if entering into the BIOS upon boot. With this specific model/type information available, you can go to this page and will then be sent direcly to the appropriate drivers for your (son's) T42.

An alternative, if you're (either now or later!) tired of messing with all these drivers etc. it is perhaps simpler and faster to get yourself a copy of the official IBM "Rescue and Recovery Media" (in the form of a set of CD's or DVD's) for your 2373-T42 from someone else. Try post a "WTB" (Want To Buy) of "LF" (Looking For) in the Marketplace of this forum. I'm sure someone will want to help you at a very fair cost - but before/when/if asking there, kindly update your profile with your location.... if you're, say, in Australia, shipping from Denmark is slow and expensive!

If the correct drivers does not not work, then at some point one might start to wonder if there's perhaps some HW failure in this T42? The free IBM diagnostics tool "PC Doctor" may help check this out; it's avalable as a download to install on the T42 HDD - get it here or as a bootable CD-ROM from --> here.

OK, Mac - now you've put at work; we count on you! :-)

Johan

What OP probably does not realize:
Most manual installations (doubleclick on download) only extract files to c:\drivers\something
You then have to go to this \something, and look there for the program setup.exe.
That will do the actual install!

Could be (part of, or entirely) the explanation... but my recent experience is however that Lenovo's downloads nowadays first unpack themselves, and then also automatically ask whether they should also be installed. What RBS is saying here is however true for the older IBM drivers; they would only automatically unpack, not automatically install.

Worth checking, of course. Thanks for reminding me of this! :-)

RBS is correct. The vast majority of drivers will end up in the Win subfolder. They have to be extracted from there as the second part of the process...

For ethernet, you'd go into C>Drivers>Win>Ethernet and run the setup from there.

For your wireless card, presuming an Intel one: C>Drivers>Win>Wlanint

For graphics: C>Drivers>Win>Video

Etc. etc...

Good luck.

Like to say thanks for the replies and sorry for not getting back sooner, but got called away with work. :(

Johan

I did try to download the system update tool, but unfortunately the T42 does not have Microsoft Net Framework installed and was unable to install it from disc, as I got a message "cannot connect to server".

Have gone back to the Lenovo site and downloaded the drivers again and made sure I run the setup.exe. But still no joy! So maybe a hardware problem, as suggested?

The T42 model is series 2373 K1G

The Error Code in device manager is Code 28

Driver Details as follows.

? Biometric Coprocessor USB\VID_0483&PID_2016\&1C077785&0&2

? Ethernet Controller PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_101E&SUBSYS_05491014&REV_03\4&39A85202

? Multimedia Audio Controller PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_24C5&SUBSYS_05371014&REV_01\3&61AAA01&0&FD

? Network Controller PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1043&SUBSYS_25518086&REV_04\4&39A85202&0&1OFO

? PCI Modem PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_24C6&SUBSYS_055A1014&REV_01\3&61AAA01&O&FE

? Unknown Device ACPI\IBM0068\5&2890D699&O

? Video Controller (VGA Compatible) PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4C57&SUBSYS_0530104&REV_oo\4&1BFA44D4&O&OOO8

Hope this information is of more help.

No problems with buying the CD's DVD's if needed from Market place, but will see what response I get first. Also if it is a hardware problem, could you let me know exactly what would need replacing?

Sorry for the long post and thanks again for your help with this.

Lmac

Having spent two days trying to work out this problem after reinstalling XP on old thinkpad I've finally got the Ibm T42 2373 up
and running ,this is how I've did it .I installed ThinkVantage System Update 3.15 from Lenovo website (the 3.14 version mentioned in this thread doesn't work it will tell you it needs to upgrade to a newer version then fail to upgrade) Download 3.15 from this page http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=TVSU-UPDATE
First you need to install The Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 from this page
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/search.aspx?q=microsoft%20.net%20framework%20version%202.0%20redistributable%20package I installed .NET frame work 1.1 first but it didn't work on its own but left it installed anyway.I also run windows update between .NET installs which found some updates for the .NET framework but it's possible version 2.0 will work on its own. After installing & restarting both go to start menu all programs Thinkvantage/system update click next to find your drivers.
hope this helps,I did have to try a number of the .NET versions before it worked but I think it was the Thinkvantage version 3.15 that made the difference.
Also if you can establish a wired connection to the net, go to Device manager double click the yellow missing drivers, select driver tab/update driver/yes this time only to update from the web, this worked for all drivers except the network controller driver which I had to find from the thinkvantage updater. With patience and persistence it can be done.
