T42p processor to support CMOV, PAE, TSC, FXSAVE?

#1 Post by caspian65 » Mon Mar 17, 2014 10:03 pm

Hi,

I have a T42p that I use as a garage laptop. I recently purchased INPA/DIS software with a cable to use for running BMW diagnostics. One of the software components requires VMware, but when I try to install, it errors out and says my CPU does not support CMOV, PAE, TSC or FXSAVE. The processor in my T42p is a Pentium M, 2.10GHz.

Does anyone know if there are other CPU's compatible with this system (Intel 2373Q1U motherboard) that support the above features?

I did get an older version of VMware to install, but when I tried to open DIS, it said that the image was created with a later version of VMware and features were not compatible.

Thanks for any help!

Welcome to the forum!

None of the CPUs applicable to your machine supports PAE natively.

Not quite sure what the other abbreviations mean, but I'm sure that someone will chime in.

You could install a 533MHz CPU such as PM760 or PM770 (which support PAE) and pinmod it to achieve the full speed on the 400MHz board.

With that said, moving to a newer machine altogether might not be a bad idea.

CMOV and FXSAVE are instructions and TSC is a special register (and RDTSC instruction). Pretty sure these shouldn't be a problem on a Pentium M though; almost certainly the only lack would be PAE. Seems to be some contradictory info on whether PAE exists on 400MHz-FSB Dothan CPUs; wikipedia and Intel seem to say it does but user reports seem to say it doesn't. EDIT: Intel's doc is probably just wrong and wikipedia got their info from Intel.

@ caspian65:

Welcome to the forum! :thumbs-UP:

Are you able to share with us what specific program(s) you - if possible - wish to run on your T42p? A link to the particular program might make it easier for readers to understand the HW requirements...

@ jdrou:

Quite some contradictory information is posted on the 'net about whether or not Pentium-M's (e.g. the 2.1 GHz SL7V3) support PAE, NX etc. For an actual run of the Sysinternals "CoreInfo" tool, that you link to, on a T42p of exactly the same model/type as the OP's (a 2373-Q1U), see this post. What may perhaps be interesting in this context is to note that Windows 8 (which require PAE and NX) can actually be installed on a T42/p.... see the thread Windows 8 installed on a T42!

Also note that in the separate wikipedia entry on the Pentium M (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentium_M) they say the original version of Dothan is basically the same as Banias except on a smaller process which would imply the capabilities should be the same (i.e. no PAE/NX) and only the 2005 refreshed models have the added features along with faster FSB. On reading more closely this actually does match what the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_In ... processors says: "PAE, XD bit (an NX bit implementation): supported by 7x5A, all 7x0 except for 710, 738, 758, 778, 733J, 753, 773" so only the 400 FSB models with "A" suffix have it (along with all the 533 FSB models) and the 2.1 GHz model 765 doesn't have an "A" version. So just the Intel doc is wrong (or it doesn't mean what we think when it says "Physical Address Extensions 32-bit").

EDIT: I assume the OP has downloaded some kind of "virtual appliance" which is basically a whole system including OS that gets installed in VMWare. Usually there is a normal install alternative for things like this though which is the direction I would try to go instead of trying to get VMWare to work on such old hardware.
