I wish I indeed had received "my" T50, but I haven't. This review has been written using a fellow forum member's unit.

Most of us have given up hope that we'll ever get to see these fascinating boards outside of mainland China.

Hi Senior ThinkPadder,

I am really impressed to see that it´s indeed possible to combine a i5 CPU with a CCFL LCD. Since some time I am using an old T60 15" case with a T61 mainboard 42W7874/44C3926 Penryn. So I was able to combine an UXGA CCFL screen with a T9500 CPU. For me that was already quite a big step.

However I think that your version is even more impressive, precisely because a i5 CPU is used somehow together with an much older chip set as I understood it right!?

I won´t make any secret that I am strongly interested in receiving such a T50 main board if somehow possible. Please let me know if there´s any chance in purchasing it.

Thanks in advance.

No. The board in question was custom designed and produced by a team of hobbyists in China.

Quite a very limited number of these boards (<100?) was produced and only a handful made their way out of mainland China. I'm afraid that the answer to this part of your question is "no".

Yes, that´s a pity.

Anyway thank you for quick reply!

However I think maybe we still need some more patience for it.

Main thing now, it´s clear that this convertion is definitely possible and I wouldn´t mind to pay for the necessary costs!

So please let me/us know anytime about the possibility to get it anyhow!

Thanks a lot!

Curious, what ever happened to the development of the t70 boards for the t6x?

About a year ago, a Thinkpad enthusiast in China had about 100 of the T50 boards made and that was it. Very few left China, and your chances of finding one for sale are slim to none.
Four 15" T61 Frankenpads collecting dust and one X62 that sees no use, but X201 and X230 in service.

Personally, I don't see it happening. Several friends of mine were waiting for this opportunity to rejuvenate their T4x systems and are bitterly disappointed...

Many of us would like to find out...unfortunately, Chinese is not one of the languages I read/speak at *any* level, and Google Translate makes me want to punch a hole in my screen so I gave up trying on to follow what's going on at 51nb...

How's your T50 project going? :P Have you managed to flash the BIOS yet? I have a ZIP drive which you can borrow in order to flash the BIOS

BTW currently there's no plan for what so called T70, but X62 is what they are trying to make

Thanks for checking in, my generous friend...

The BIOS has been flashed, and the system slapped together for initial testing and "teaser" pictures, as seen here: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=117010

Still waiting for a few bits and then I'll be presenting it in its full glory...

I'd be interested in T70 a lot more than in a X62, but am honestly just happy to be on my way to completing the T50 project...

I've played with a couple of different ones, but in the end i7 640M will go in there, I just haven't bought it yet.

I noticed your wanted ad on NBR. This looks like your best shot: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Core-i7-6 ... 487b5dd111
Either that or keep a vigilant watch on Ebay to snag one for about $50.
If not that, the cheapest ones I can find on Taobao are a QS for $61 plus shipping: http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a23 ... ii0md1e25a
Or a regular version for $67 plus shipping: http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a23 ... ii0md1f037

Is it possible to adjust the settings in any way, to get a silent (and cool) laptop while having at least T61-like performance?

Oh the machine is cool until pushed really hard, but I haven't been able to quiet the fan down.

Thank you. Doesn't Tpfancontrol work? Could it if else be possible to use a low-percent CPU profile in Windows 7?

As I've stated in the review: it does nothing. You've got to remember that these machines don't have an IBM/Lenovo BIOS/EC.

Hmm, I would still imagine that for instance using only one thread, possibly not on full speed, would slow the fan down, due to less heat development.

Once again: it's NOT about the heat. It's about the default EC settings in BIOS. I've played with ThrottleStop and quite a few things can get accomplished that way, but a silent fan is not one of them.

TPFanControl is communicating with IBM/LENOVO EC, is it not ? If yes there's no option to make it work since T50 does not have one - as far as I know. You may try to disassembly bios code with iASL and try to figure out what kind of controller has been incorporated with this piece of electronics ;-).

Way above my pay grade and not really a priority as far as I'm concerned...

I can't.

The one reviewed here belongs to a forum member and is not for sale. Mine died a couple of years ago and I wasn't able to obtain a replacement board.

You'll need someone in mainland China to locate the board for you.

Good luck.
