Hi all.

Just purchased some rock-solid IBM hardware for 35€ and man was it a sweet deal. The machine is flawless, all I had to do was to throw in another 512m memory stick and install some operating system, which turned out to be MX14.

And now I have a lightning-fast machine for almost all-purpose computing (obviously not much videostreaming though... 8) ).

What a deal and what a machine. It's been a few years that I have typed with a keyboard this nice on a laptop!

Yes that's true. I have bought quite a many second hand laptops from online auctions over the years, and this was probably second best buy. Usually these cheap machines come without a functional battery or charger or no HDD or memory but this had all of it in working condition.

Obviously the battery isn't what it used to be, there seems to be only about an hour's worth of juice left but it's great anyway for a machine this age.

And thanks for the welcome!

These are arguably some of the finest keyboards ever found on ThinkPads, let alone laptops in general.

Enjoy!

Congratulations on your new purchase!

The T Series is an excellent line of ThinkPads since it launched 15 years ago. I think among the best IBM ever made. I just found this forum myself back in September and am a T40 owner (in my signature). It coexists with an N5110. I use both machines on a regular basis for university business; the T40 is a Windows XP machine while the N5110 is a Windows 7 machine.

If you are able to care for and maintain them, these machines will run forever! I believe the T40 and T41 were the flagships during MY2003 with USB 2.0 and Pentium M processors being a new technology at the time. Also extremely thin and light machines with strong magnesium internals. Mine has a genuine IBM battery which holds a full charge and I believe is the original; I don't use the battery all that much and I don't recall replacing it.

TIP: I use Pledge wood cleaner to maintain the rubber coating on the lid and as protectant on the rest of the case. These were expensive laptops when new!

The laptop still looks new if you are interested in the following photos.

Yes I have to agree. I bought a Lenovo branded T61 for my nephew about a year ago and while I was setting that machine up it felt very nice all the way. Then a friend of mine asked to switch the OS for his daughter's lower spec X61. And that felt like a very nice machine as well. After that I've been looking for some cheap Thinkpads and found this one.

Edit. Currently I'm working the Thinkpad with MX14-Linux, though I have to keep another hard drive with XP on it, though I really don't like the idea. Does the T41 run Win 7 decently? I have one Win 7 license lying around here somewhere...

The durability is of course a factor because this machine will be seeing some action at home and elsewhere :)
So probably it will look somewhat worse when fall comes. Then I'll have to clean it up again a little... Naah, I'll try to keep it tidy anyway... :)

The battery doesn't work too well, it has only about an hour worth of juice left (Haven't tried dimming the screen though). And your machine looks great, here's a quick snap of mine...

In my opinion, you are better off keeping XP, but that is your choice.

Most programs and hardware today are still made compatible with XP SP3, so there would be little benefit in going to 7 on that machine. A single core machine simply doesn't have that much oomph for an OS like 7 with SP1 and antivirus, but again, it is your decision to try and see what works for you. On a XP vs 7 comparison, I'm certain you would get faster performance with XP.

That's true. But if it was entirely up to me then I wouldn't install either XP or 7. But I need some software which has been rewritten for this year in such a way that Wine can't work with it in Linux. (No need for any OS fights though, Windows isn't my preferred system but I get along with it just fine.. :) ) And if memory serves, my Minolta Pagepro 1200W-printer was really a pain to get working under Vista, so probably 7 won't be a walk in the park either.

Yes I know... If only we lived in a world like 15 years ago. I recall that back in those days computers were picked on application performance, not on the basis of which OS will work in it... That sadly applies for "mainstream" Linux as well.

Depending on which FRU you get, the T4x keyboards are identical in feel / quality to the TransNote and subsequently T6x series (in this case the NMB variants-- which all use the same switch and general design). I know some traditionally place the T4x keyboards in a separate category, but that's probably more related to the chassis in which the keyboard resides.

Just out of curiosity, how does the pledge cleaner keep the rubber coating safe? I assume you add it on in thick layers. ThinkPads are notorious for having the rubber coating being rubbed off in the corners of the lids.

In my experience the Pledge wood cleaner keeps the rubber from drying out, and by doing this I believe it may also prevent the rubber from crumbling and separating from the lid. Kind of like an Armor-All solution. I also notice that very minor scuffs in the rubber disappear with the Pledge. Your experience my vary.

I know this is an old topic, but since I was cleaning my T40 I thought I would provide you with a few pictures. This information is relevant for any ThinkPad with a rubberized coating.

After cleaning, you can see the clear difference from when the machine hadn't been cleaned. It seems that the rubber coating absorbs the Pledge and keeps it from drying out. Kind of like lotion for a ThinkPad! I take care of all my things!!

Pledge also works well on the entire machine. Once you apply it to the screen you can simply wipe up the excess. Like waxing a car, but you don't need to buff it particularly hard. I do not use Windex or any other cleaners. Even the Intel and Windows decals still look brand new.

Thanks for the tips, though this little machine has seen more use than I originally thought with some nice software tricks that allow me to use Spotify and fullscreen Youtube videos (not quite 720p though, being a XGA screen). It is in fairly active use and not always in such perfect conditions so I'm just using it now but I'll definitely try out those cleaning tips someday!
