T43 14-inch MoBo in T42p 15-inch Chasis

#1 Post by WarhawkCZ » Tue Dec 20, 2022 5:19 am

Guys, I just want to make sure. Will 14-inch T43 mobo work in T42p -15inch Chasis?
Is there any catch (like LCD cable)? The T42p is 1600x1200

Well, for starts you will need the interposer that goes between the 14" mobo and the 15" chassis. It's a standard part.

Is it an ATI or an Intel-based T43? Intel-based may have a problem driving 1600x1200, IIRC.

Just in case, I have some interposers for 15" T4x (and some others for 15" 4:3 T60 as well).
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

Thanks for the feedback guys. I have complete systems. The t42p comes with a dead MoBo (likely). The t43 has some cosmetic issues and only 1024x768 LCD. Both systems are ATI based.

Well in this case I have done the swaps before exactly like that. The swap can be perfect without problems, except if your T42 were working and didn't come with a fingerprint reader, the motherboard would never work with a fingerprint reader.
A few things I can remember that you should take note:
- Please, swap the PCMCIA cages along with their motherboards. T42 and T43 cages are totally incompatible and mixing them will give you strange behaviours such as sleep not working!
- Also swap the heatsinks with respect to their motherboards too.
- If you have Radeon X300 as I suspect you do, while it would be fine with a 1600x1200 display, in my experience the UI experience would be rather poor... Simply not powerful enough to handle such high res well.
- T43 would run hotter and also put more strain on your battery too - especially with the UXGA IPS display and such. If you wanna get batteries for these, get a 9 cell to better handle the power draw.
- Be careful with the interposer board for the Ultrabay IDE connector when you remove the motherboard, as if you forget the screw there or something, you can rip the IDE connector off.
- Also oddly enough, 14.1" T4x lids are made out of magnesium on the inside, whereas 15" lids are made entirely out of plastic (high quality plastic, but still)
