Max CPU in T40..???

#1 Post by sickofit » Fri Oct 21, 2005 9:36 am

Curious in what the max CPU upgrade is for a 1.3Ghz T40..???..What are the socket pin count,.??...will any mobile 266FSB P-M CPU work...???

Anyone got anything kicking around they want to sell...??

Thanks....

Processor upgrade.

#2 Post by smugiri » Sat Oct 22, 2005 12:17 am

Theorectically, Max CPU supported in a T40 is 1.7GHz ( sorry, edited this to 1.6Ghz, transcription error )which is the fastest speed that they made the Banias PM family of processors in (check page 7).. FSB runs at 400MHz or higher on all PM processors.

However, although the Banias and Dothan families of processors have different form factors, they can both apparently go into a 479 socket without issues ( from google cache) meaning you could 'theoretically' drop a 2.26 Dothan into your Thinkpad. The bus speed and other factors ( including memery speed and timing etc ) would present performances issue ( Banias is 400MHz while Dothan is 533MHz ). Check out this link giving complete specs on both processor families.

You need to do some research and confirm that this information is indeed correct before doing this and as always, YMMV.

I installed an Intel Pentium M processor 745 (1.8GHz) FSB400 2MB Cache Dothan core on a Thinkpad T40 2373-72U

You must update your embedded controller to 3.04 and bios to 3.18 for the cpu to work correctly

its socket 479-m so maybe it will work even with the 755 (2.0Gh) model, cant confirm that thou

kyrotech,

I was wondering if you could post more info about your project. I own T40 2373-75U and am interested in popping in a faster chip. Do you notice a considerable difference in performance?

Thank you.

well the complete update was Pentium M 745 1.8 Ghz Dothan FSB400 2 MB Cache, 1 GB (2x512 MB) PC2700 memory, and Fujitsu 80 GB 5400 RPM drive. The laptop now rocks at Photoshop CS2 and AutoCad 2005, says my friend :P

And yes, too bad I dont have a Dothan 2 Ghz cpu, but I think the board can go all the way up to that, even more, who knows

It seems that your T40 has Radeon 9600 video. Is it a p model or mobo upgrade? Mine has Radeon 7500 so I wonder if this makes a difference when upgrading CPU. I appreciate your input.
