I've ordered a T42 with a 40GB drive and plan to upgrade it to 80GB/5400RPM. It appears I have basically two choices:

Hitachi HTS548080M9AT00
http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductdesc.asp?description=22-146-209&depa=0

or

Toshiba MK8026GAX
http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductdesc.asp?description=22-149-020&depa=0

I think IBM uses the Hitachi drive, but I've read some things about the noise from it (clicking, etc.). Does anyone know anything about the Toshiba? I did a web search and came up with very little.

Thanks,
Jay

I don't know Toshiba drive, but I have Hitachi 5K80 and IMHO it's a great drive - fast, cool and virtually silent. You can hear the clicking noise from time to time, but it is not loud.
I got mine from Zipzoomfly.com, they have it now for $188 with free 2-nd day shipping.

there was a toshiba 7k50 GAX vs 7K60 hitachi thread on x1000forums.com, see if it's still there.

I've purchased about a dozen of the 5K80 HDs for clients (almost all from ZipZoom BTW) and have heard nothing but praise from them.

Regards,

James

The 5K80 in my T42p made annoying "ticking" sounds when I first got it (presumably when it was parking the heads...which it does very aggressively), but after a day or two the ticks got substantially softer. Somehow, the drive managed to "break itself in". I am not sure how this happened...my theory is that the heads actually got bent upwards a very minute amount after repeated trips of the parking ramp, so that they no longer make so much noise. Otherwise, the drive is amazingly quiet and cool.

I am not sure, but I do recall reading that the Hitachi 5K80 uses less power than the Toshiba.
