Move Lid and computer goes blue screen or blank
Move Lid and computer goes blue screen or blank
When I move the lid or touch the bottom left side of the screen, the computer goes blue screen or blank. It does not happen every time but frequently.
I removed the key board and pad. Tightened the screws in that area. One of hinge screws was loose but that helped but did not solve the problem. The wires coming from the screen to the MB look in good shape from what I can see.
I am ready to take off the LCD screen to see if anything is loose.
Before I do, does anyone have any suggestions?

Put pressure on the GPU (has a big ATI on it) and then move the lid. It it does not fail then you have a loose GPU.
Re: Move Lid and computer goes blue screen or blank
Thank you, however, I cannot find the GPU. Attached is a link of what I see. What must I remove to find the GPU?

Put pressure on the part of the fan that extends over the GPU. It's not where the fan blades are, it's at the other end of the fan/heatsink.

Remove the keyboard, put a 1 square inch of material (e.g. a stack of paper or a sheet of metal) that's about 1.5 mm thick on the area that Harryc described, put the keyboard back in, and tighten the screws. Now, the part of the keyboard around the trackpoint buttons and the touchpad should bulge upward a bit. Using this method, I fixed my T42's loose GPU about two months ago and the laptop still works fine.

WOW, yes I put pressure on heat-sink and whala it works....hopefully by putting paper in as Harryc suggests will fix permanently.
Thanks again to you both. Hopefully I will not be back on to say its back again.
Also can either recommend a good fan which is quieter? Since I have it apart might as well go all the way. I presently have:

All those paper/coin tricks are only a "delay of execution".
Those mobos have a loose GPU and/or Southbridge problem, which will not be correctable after a while.

You are correct. Mine just started acting up again. I put a piece of credit card to push it down.
How to I permanently correct the problem?
Thanks,
Dato

I sent you an e-mail as I would like to replace the MOBO.
