T30 mainboard replacment

#1 Post by fultontech » Sun Mar 29, 2015 7:45 pm

I left my T30 plugged in overnight a few months ago. It just happened to be the same night of a large thunderstorm rolled through. In the morning the screen was dark but the power on indicator was lit. I turned it off, counted to 10 and turned it back on.
I got one long beep and two short. Not good. I got out the HMM and read the bad news. Mainboard replacement.
I ordered off Amazon and received a board in a few days. Then I had to put everything aside.

I just completed it today.

It's going through the system recovery right now.

The old board was one of the original FRU listed in the HMM with the security chip - all made in China.
The new board FRU is not in the HMM, there is no security chip, and was made in Korea.
I got the unit off E-Bay a few years ago and never really looked at it too hard I guess. But now I can tell it was disassembled at some point in the past. Screw covers are missing, an air baffle and a couple of screws that hold the ultrabay cage in place are not there.

I'm waiting to test the wireless radio and Bluetooth.

Notes for anyone else needing to do this. Thermal grease is needed if you do anything that requires removing the heatsink.
