PC Doctor for T21 - most recent version

#1 Post by ja-rek » Wed Jul 20, 2016 11:32 am

Hello everyone,

this is my first post on the forum.
I have bought old T21 to install both MS DOS and Win 95 (dual boot).
But first I would like to make sure it is fully working.
Could you please help me?
I am looking for answers to these questions:

1. What is the most recent version of PC Doctor that works T21?
I have found 1ety46ww.exe on the web (PC-Doctor DOS CD 2.0.1625) but the readme file does not mention T21 as a supported model.

2. Do I need to have a floppy to run it or CD-Rom is enough?

3. Can T21 boot from a CD? and from USB/Pendrive?

thanks a lot for help!
Jarek

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

1) Most recent version of PC Doctor for DOS for the T2x series should be 2.0.1154. The file you specified was the CD bootable version for most of the other Thinkpads from around that era (A3x, R4x, R5x, R6x, T30, T4x, X3x, X4x, X6x, Z6x). I believe that the factory never issued the diagnostics for the T21 system on CD; it was available on 3 floppy disks that were downloaded as executable files. That said, somebody did manage to merge all three floppies onto a bootable CD that was initially named ibm_t22_pcdiag.iso. If you notice my signature line I used to host some PC Doctor files however I was slapped with a legal order to stop distribution.

2) If you find and download the three executable files, you will need three disks and a floppy drive. If you find the .ISO, then you will create the bootable CD.

Code: Select all

File aa MD5: 240e8b7c1224eecb541cebb14852af07
File ab MD5: 14fd6fdf32fb907e2c7352bf3ab3fce0
File ac MD5: 6670e78ada9183d14e4e36f678cb17da
3) The T21 can definitely boot from the CD. You can press the F12 key when the IBM "splash" screen appears to access the boot device menu. I'm not sure if it can boot from a flash drive but if it can, connect the drive before powering up the system and if it is listed in the boot device menu, then it should work.

... if Google'ing for "2.0.1154" you will e.g. find this site (named "PC Doctor for DOS T2x") with three disks. Maybe that's what you need?

According to this site the filesize of those three .exe files should have the following file-sizes:

Code: Select all

pcdr1a.txt 3921 2005-07-19 MIGR-4YZM3F README for version 2.0.1154 PC Doctor for DOS
pcdr1aa.exe 1182977 2005-07-19 MIGR-4YZM3F Version 2.0.1154 PC Doctor for DOS, disk 1 of 3
pcdr1ab.exe 1224151 2005-07-19 MIGR-4YZM3F Version 2.0.1154 PC Doctor for DOS, disk 2 of 3
pcdr1ac.exe 1132956 2005-07-19 MIGR-4YZM3F Version 2.0.1154 PC Doctor for DOS, disk 3 of 3

That matches the MD5 checksum that I have stored for the .ISO.

ibm_t22_pcdiag.iso

All of the mirrors on the web are dead, if anyone still have this file and could upload, i'd appriciate.

The first link in Johan's post still has the 3 files.

Or try this PC-Doctor for A30/T30 and newer:

http://ps-2.kev009.com/pccbbs/mobiles/1ety46ww.exe

1ety46ww.exe didn't work for T23. Reports " missing pcdr.ini " file...

Copied the INI file in every folder and subfolder, this time it didn't report an ini error but bad file or missing file, rebooting system problem. It is clear that T3x/T4x/T6x/R5x/r6X/x3x/x6X/A3X/G4X/g5X/z6X DOS pc-doctor version is not meant to work with T23 and it doesn't work.
