T30 Recovery CD Set Needed

#1 Post by Homer 712 » Thu May 07, 2009 2:05 pm

Recently retired and picked up a used ThinkPad T30 2366-44U and am looking to put it back into operating condition so I can use it for my hobby software. Are recovery CDs available that would load Windows 2000 as well as all the original IBM ThinkPad software?

Many thanks!

Welcome to the forum.

If your laptop has 512MB or more RAM, it can easily run Windows XP.
Maxed out you can even put in 2x 1GB PC2700 SODIMMs.
Check your PM "new messages" box.

Hi there,

I'm in a similar situation. I bought a Thinkpad T30 series 2366-57U and need recovery CD's for my machine. I need to take it back to factory conditions as it seems to have "caught" some Trojans. It came with Windows 2000 Pro (which I have the restore CD for that) but would love to have XP if available.

Any help would be appreciated!

Hi there,

I too have just bought a T30 off eBay - model 2366-83G. I don't know what the previous owner did to it, but it had only XP SP1 installed and it had been fitted with a DELL wifi card!!

We also have other Thinkpads that we use around the house, like a R40 and T42. I have purchased recovery CD sets for these, and I was wondering if either of these disk sets could be used to restore the T30 to factory state.

Any support would be gratefully received.

Best regards

David.

Your R40 (with 32MB ATI Radeon 7500) is a very close contender to work AS-IS on the T30.
Just make sure to start with a blank hard disk.
If there is still anything on it, get DBAN and run that first: http://www.dban.org/download

Dear RBS,

thank you for your response - I have started the recovery process with the R40 CDs after using the Killdisk software mentioned in a previous thread elsewhere, and...it has started the recovery process!!!

Many thanks again from wet and windy Tadley, in Hampshire, England (UK)

I've just acquired a used T30 (2366-92U) 1.8Ghz CPU 1Gb ram from eBay for $200. It came with a fresh install of XP Pro but not the original version. I will clone the hard drive before I start loading programs on it but I would also like to get IBM restore discs.

I've briefly uses different manufacture notebooks at work but never own one. I have always had the impression that the Thinkpad was the best.

Thanks for all the help and for a great forum.

I'm looking for the recovery CDs (Win XP) for a friend's T30 (2366-CG5) that had a disk failure. Any help appreciated!

Only English version available here.
Try IBM/Lenovo Italy, and be prepared to pay €40.- and up.
Or try our Marketforum with a WTB (Want To Buy).

Hello all, I'm new to the forum and laptops. I recently bought a T30 (2366-QU5 2.4GHz, 1.0 Gb ram, 60GB HDD, XP Pro) and would also like to obtain a set of factory restore cd's. I've been all over this forum and have already updated the wifi card from 802b to 802b,g per info gleaned from several threads. This is a great resource!

After reading this thread I am wondering about my T30 and T21. I used a Win XP installer and downloaded any other needed files from the Lenovo site. What do the recovery disks offer beyond setting up the laptop as I outlined above? Do you really get a noticeable performance increase as one person noted?

When using the Recovery disks, you won't need a CD-key, as it includes a Volume License Key from IBM.
If you install them using a DVD or DVD/CDRW drive you also get the DVD player (and CD burning if CDRW) software from IBM, which you won't get with a regular XP, when you do all the IBM/Lenovo downloads.
Disadvantage is, that those CDs (at least for W2K or XP on T30 and T2x) reflect Windows without any Service Packs, so you need to install those separate.

The T43 set I got from "Thinkpad Recovery Store" was at SP2 but is still a bit of work to get it up to date.

Additional info on downloading the XP Recovery Discs for the T2x series would be most helpful as well. I had downloaded a Rescue and Recovery program off Lenovo's site a while back, but not sure if it is the right one. Haven't had the need to use it yet. Knock on wood.
