My Upgraded 2.4 Ghz T30

#1 Post by decamposem » Sun May 16, 2010 7:40 pm

Hi All,

Recently i upgraded my T30 to 2.4 Ghz w/ 2GB DDR Ram to squeeze a little more juice out of this puppy. BIOS and WinXP System properties were recognizing the upgrade..however ..

When i installed CPU-Z and Prime 95 to benchmark the CPU ... i had found the CPU to only be running @ 1.2 Ghz at 100% Full Load. Figured Intel Speed Step may have been the cause ..so had disabled that in the Bios ... and still reporting 1.2 Ghz max. Had also checked the FSB and memory frequency and below were the settings:

Memory @ 2GB: 598 MHz
FSB: 99Mhz

These speeds just seemed VERY odd to me..i've tried doing searches only and still tring to scratch my head on this one why the system clock won't go past half way. I have reinstlled WinXP once and am in the Process of doing a another Low level format in hopes it will re-synch with the bios power settings or something.

Bios is version 2.06 ...not sure if this means anything or not ??. would i just have to buy a new motherboard or is there ANY hope ?

Any help would really be appreciated.

Thanks

Please post a link for the source of the CPU, or post the CPU part number if you know it.

1.2Ghz is battery optimized mode for that CPU. Plug it in and set up a high performance profile in Lenovo's Power Management software.

Install the ACPI driver and the battery MaxiMiser.

Spot on about the coffee warmer ..well ..at least i won't have to worry about it getting cold anymore ;P.

another question ...finally got it work on 2.4 Ghz ..but it goes to 2.4 ..for like 5 seconds then goes back down to 1.2 for 10 seconds..then back to 2.4 Ghz for 5 seconds at 100% full load...like a pattern or something ...is this normal ?. Temperature spikes to 80 C then goes back down when dropped to 1.2 GHz...just kinda curious ..since i would like this to work at 2.4 Ghz constantly

Thanks

You should be able to create a high performance profile that pegs the CPU all the time....lord only knows why you'd want to do that for that CPU though. It's running way too hot. I have heard over the years that a 2.0Ghz CPU is best for a T30. Another thought is that because the heat is so high the CPU may be ratcheting down to save itself ... I know that Pentium M's have that capability, as do other models of Pentiums. (Your CPU knows what's going on better than you do :) )

Am thinking about getting this which apparently will keep it pretty cool...
http://reviews.cnet.com/docks-stands/an ... 34900.html

It's powered by 2 fans and uses your existing usb slot as a power source (also has an adapter so you don't loose that usb slot either). Comes with a high and low setting.

would love it to be pegged at 2.4 Ghz ...but yeah CPU is definately smarter and Quicker than i would ever be :D.

p.s: i already have the vented Wifi door and Heat spreaders for the 2GB of Ram.

I think you'd be much happier with a 2.0Ghz CPU...but it sounds like you're on a mission. I don't think that cooler will help either, but keep us posted.

I have that cooler and it does not work well. It sucks air from the top and blows out the sides. Since there are air intake vents on the underside of Thinkpads, my opinion is that coolers that blow air upwards would work better. Otherwise, the fans on the cooler would be working against the one in the laptop. I have a Targus brand cooler that blows the air upwards and it brings the temp down a few degrees. That's just my take on it anyway.

Also if your temps are spiking quickly, that might indicate a bad thermal contact between the chip and heatsink.

Appreciate the help.

i went ahead and bought this:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001U3 ... ss_product

It cools as you mentioned..form back or bottom and cools upwards (cooling all hot areas)..and is designed to use little battery power...and very light.

I descided to buy Cool Silver paste instead..apparantly it performs better than Artictic Silver 5.:

Left hand side rear of the pad there is a grill. There are at least 2 versions, one with wider spacing than the other, regardless remove every other upright. Hot air exiting should flow easier now.

Update and summary for all who is interested:

-Bought Logitech Cool Pad and works great..Lap temps make the T30 very comfortable to use.
-Tweaked TPFanControl.ini .. and CPU now runs at max 60 degrees F at 100% CPU load @ 2.4 GHZ..not bad at all.
-Used Rem Oil to Lube fan to sound smoother, and cool silver paste for better heat dissipation.
-Loaded Windows 7 and got around the "graphics problem" for using Aero effects. Found a piece of software for transparant effect that only needs 8MB VRAM (which is more than enough).

Specs Summary:
DDR 2GB (with Heat pads and upgraded Ram door)
2.4 Ghz @ Max 60 Degrees
Windows 7 (with transparency Effect *normally not available using T30 graphics card)
Mini PCI 802.11 g (Super G wireless @ 108 MB/Sec)
320 GB HDD (5400 RPM)
low profile PCMCIA x2 (USB 2.0 and 5in1 SD card reader)

T30 now works like a dream... too bad i have to give it back to my sis :(

TPFancontrol doesn't work with my 2.4GHz processor. Someone else said they got it to work. Is it motherboard dependent or processor dependent in its function?

I'll say that the SL6VC works fine with TPFC in A31p which belongs to the same platform as T30, so I guess it would have something to do with planar and/or BIOS.

Good luck.
