T60 RIP

So, after more than 10 years in this group, I will probably have my main interest elsewhere. Back in 2004 when I left my job to go on pension, it was with a T40. When that died because of the USB-failure, I bought a T41 laid off from professionals. I then got my eyes fixed on the T60's, of which I have had two, and the success here led me to supply the rest of the family with similar T60's. All bought for reasonable costs laid off from firms.
My own was using a SSD and was (is) superfast, under 20 secs from cold startup with Win8.1, still running with no hardware issues, even equipped with a set of USB 3-ports.

But what does an old Thinkpadder want for his birthday? I went for Single Malt Whiskies and a new T440 on which i am typing now.

Lighter, better screen, webcam, fine keyboard and fantastic battery time. And since one can now use the standby-function on just closing the lid, the machine is fully functional after few seconds - so Windows start-up time is of no consequence any more.

Build quality seems OK, the only issue is the touchpad which will take some time to get used to

The 440 is a good machine, if you can live with the lack of resemblance to previous Thinkpads, and the strange TrackPad. Even though I assume one can learn to like that too. I have a 440s that I borrowed from my wife's work, and performance and battery time is great. I found out it even has a secondary built in battery, as it turned on even if the battery was out and no power was coonected. God luck with the 440.

I just notice from Lenovo's specs for the T60 in your signature (1952-Y9H) that it is a 14" XGA model. If it had been a 15" SXGA+ (or UXGA), i.e. with a FlexView/IPS LCD, then your comment about a beter LCD would have surprised me!

Those 14" widescreen units sure are light aren't they? I love my T410, it's very fast and feels like a feather in my hands.

The t60 is getting a little long on the tooth.

I just came back from the windows store and they had a lenovo yoga thinkpad special edition.

I think that I can live with the new widescreen laptops I guess, but I really prefer the t60 style keyboard.

What are the 'newest' models that still use the t60 keyboard again and has the highest resolution screen?

It's the *20 series. Not the exact same keyboard, but still a 7-row layout. Highest resolution in 14" was HD+ which is 1600x900. T420/s. If you don't mind a bigger (15.6") unit, 1920x1080 was available on T/W 520.

The T400 and T500 also used the T60 series keyboard.

The T400 has 14.1-inch 16:10 widescreen LCDs, with 1280x800 or 1440x900 pixels.
The T500 has 15.4-inch 16:10 widescreen LCDs, with 1280x800, 1650x1050, or 1920x1200 pixels.

No IPS or AFFS option though.

the deal breaker for me as far as migrating past the T60 is losing the metal components in the lid and not doing anything more for me than the 40 dollar T60 cannot accomplish.

If Lenovo made a metal shielded laptop computer, I would spring for one but I am not paying 800 bucks to downgrade to plastic

Actually, that would be "past T61/p" and not "past T60"...

Besides, as far as I know, the metal components are only in the 14" T60 lid, not 15".

The T61 series have a whole rollcage there, I think all versions.

You know a lot more than I do about these departed Thinkpads, however my understanding was that the T61 has a internal magnesium cage, not a metal lid.

I like the metal lid because in the summer I will use the commuter train or my mountain bike for local commuting and travel instead of my truck, and you can pack items in my laptop bag facing the cover which prevents any damage to the screen, computer or other items in my laptop bag.

A internal cage is more of a drop mitigation feature in my opinion, which is also valuable, but the price and durability benefits sort of end with the T60 for my intent and purpose.

In all fairness, if you drop enough stuff on any ThinkPad lid for an extended period of time, the pressure marks on the screen will eventually show their ugly face.
