Display Issue: HV150UX2-100

#1 Post by fatpolomanjr » Sun Dec 27, 2015 10:01 pm

Hello,

I bought a brand new UXGA LED display on aliexpress and it was in great shape aside from a single stuck pixel. After a few days, I got this halo going around the entire display. It shows up with any background, even during the splash screen. A link to pictures of what I'm talking about is here:

I was able to get mostly a full refund from the seller, except for $20 and the shipping cost, but I got to keep the display. Is there anything I can do to remedy this? It was nicer than my current UXGE LED display, which has dust trapped under the screen. I just want to know if maybe there is a connection issue with the lcd cable or inverter, or if anyone else knows for sure it is just the display itself that is faulty.

Thanks.

Edit: I was running JScreenFix for a while to try to remove that stuck pixel. Could this be some kind temporary screen burn-in?

Edit2: Looks like a backlight bleed issue.

If you have the Serial number of that screen, what is the third character? (indicates Grade or Rank)
It should be a letter "T" if the screen(-batch) was properly tested and approved.
Any other letter indicates it's not top-quality.

Is it possible that they put something on the front?
Maybe it was originally a glossy screen that was "made" matte with a cheap filter-screen?

There is a T in the third letter of the serial number, and there was a matte filter screen. I just removed it. Didn't even know there is a glossy version of this display. I'm not yet inclined to test if that helped any, nor am I sure it was meant to help or just verify the display was of dubious quality.

It doesn't look like bleed to me in the least judging by your pictures.

Turn the panel on in a completely dark environment. What do you see? Is the "halo" apparent the moment that the panel lights up?

Do you use ATI Catalyst?
if so, check the CCC settings using this info: http://en.community.dell.com/support-fo ... 1/19638525
What happens if you turn off/uninstall CCC (or install if you haven't got it yet)?

I think it was actually burn in. Or "image sticking". The same thing happened to me tonight, in Windows 7, on a different display:

I installed a driver update that restarted me to the login screen (a red and black leaf / IBM Thinkpad wallpaper) and I left it at the login screen for a few hours (!). I got the same exact ring of backlight. Different OS (Windows 7 vs. Xubuntu 14.04), motherboard (Intel vs NVIDIA gpu), ram (4gb vs 8gb), display (Eric Guiles' vs. aliexpress purchase), LCD/LED mod (soldered RBS mod vs. newer un-soldered RBS mod).

The one, and ONLY one, thing that was constant was that wallpaper being on for a long time. In Windows 7 the 10 minute time limit to turn off the display doesn't work at the login screen after a restart, and in Xubuntu 14.04 I didn't enable any display management time limit to turn off the display. Both had the same background on for hours, and both had the same exact burn-in pattern.

I've left the display off with the laptop turned on for about an hour and a half, and the pattern has already started to go away. Turns out the guys at aliexpress refunded me $100 for a perfectly working display (that I bought for $150) that had reversible "damage". Just thought I should update this thread for anyone else that runs into this issue.

tl;dr Don't leave static images up on LED LCD displays for hours at a time, including the coveted 4:3 HV150UX2-100.

Does the T apply to the HV150UX1-100 displays also?
does this look like the start of a serial number: EATH06.... ?
or 11S13N..... ?

Thanks for all the help!

Yes, same thing.
EATH06... looks like one.
11S13N... never seen one like that.
