After looking for several months at all sorts of models with Flexviews screens (starting with A31Ps, and everything after that), I finally realized I would not be happy with anything less than the T60P. So I scoured eBay for a couple of months, and always had an eye on Craigslist in Los Angeles, where I live. One Saturday morning a T60P showed up on Craigslist, with a phone number from a good part of town. It was the 2623 DDU. I acted quickly will stop

I went to his immaculate, architecture student digs, and I saw that the T60P was in great shape but had an oddity. In any kind of bright display settings the screen would go black... ostensibly not a good sign. I thought of going into BIOS, and setting the display at maximum, and the problem disappeared.

He used the machine for a couple of years, then only used it for light web browsing at home for the third year. He obviously took very good care of it with only one light scratch on the rubberized cover, and he asked for $400. And that's what I paid.

I usually run it at full brightness, sometimes setting it down to seven once the display has been on a little while. It's the nicest screen on the eyes that I've ever used.

Surprisingly, it runs very well and very quickly on Vista 32 Ultimate. The UAC doesn't bother me at all, and I only have SP1 on there. Perhaps when my life gets simpler I'll upgrade the CPU.

Thanks for the offer of help.

So what do you think about using just distilled water with a microfiber cloth to clean the screen?

Sorry about the peculiar typos in my post. There is a phrase there that sounds like Esperanto. I need to update my Dragon Naturally Speaking this weekend sometime.

What version are you using? Is it that good now? Had my dad try it and give up several years back.

It's Dragon Naturally Speaking 10.1 professional.

Ever since version 9, Naturally Speaking has been truly impressive, with a very high rate of accuracy. It's even accurate despite the fact that I'm using a low grade desktop microphone, and due to a peculiarity of the 10.1 installer disk when I installed it on my T60P it installed version 10, which is why I have to update it to 10.1 with a download from Nuance.

If I were to install it on my 64-bit HP 9000T it would install normally as 10.1.

I consider Naturally Speaking to be one of the most important programs on any computer that I use. With a good microphone you can expect 99% accuracy, and it sure takes the strain off of your fingers and wrists. At some point typing will be obsolete, and that will not depress me one bit.

At any rate I should proof read anything before I send it out.

Get it for your dad. You'll be doing him a big favor. And I don't work for Nuance!

I'm still curious if anybody cleans their screens with microfiber cloths and 100% distilled water?!

Thank you so much for the insights. Do you use it for typing only or other activities as well? We used to have an older version that eventually he dumped (I'll see if I can find what version it was).

So, as per consensus what is best for cleaning LCD screens / LCD TVs? I need to do a few that are overdue.

Well first, I must underline the deficiencies of my own setup, deficiencies which can be easily fixed. First, as I pointed out, I need to simply download and update version 10 to 10.1, which I have not been able to do yet.

Secondly I am using an old Telex desktop USB microphone, which suffers in comparison to much better, currently available desktop microphones, or high quality wired or wireless headsets. Even with my deficient setup, if I articulate carefully and with low background noise it is very accurate. With a better microphone setup I know that recognition is significantly better, and background noise less of a problem.

You can open up programs, and control them by voice. When I first installed it I was able to simply say search for a particular item or subject on the web, and it would automatically open up the default browser and search for it. Since version 10 is a trifle buggy, that search capacity seems not to work right now, and it may just be a matter of settings, but more likely it is a matter of my failure to update. As it is now, I can simply say "Open Mozilla Firefox" and put the search terms by voice into the input field.

Even with my limited set up (I'm using OpenOffice which does not allow me to control the menu items as I would be able to in Microsoft Word or Microsoft Office) it is much more pleasurable and easier to dictate a letter than to type it. Save your wrists and fingers for better things than typing! I consider it one of my most valued programs, and its accuracy is vastly improved over older versions. I started with version 6.0 Professional,
and the program has advanced by leaps and bounds.

With the newest versions it is said that you can skip the training step in setting the program up, but I think it is prudent to do the training, which simply consists of reading a few minutes of text, usually excerpts of famous speeches or stories. The program adapts to the acoustic idiosyncrasies of each user's voice, and creates a user file which opens up by default when you use the program. It is possible, however, for two or more users to each set up their own user file and select it (or switch it) when the program is opened up. So more than one user can use the same installed program.

Just to finish off the Dragon NaturallySpeaking question, I just uninstalled version 10, and updated to version 10.1, and it's much more accurate, even with my passable desktop microphone.

It's great.

I've run into an issue.

My old R60 has a defunct screen (SXGA+), which I'd like to replace. I recently came across some spare parts from a T42, which included a SXGA+ FlexView panel (N150P3-L01, FRU: 92P6680), the latter of this is still on sale for a meager € 30.00.

I would like to know whether this panel will be work with my R60. I've been looking all over the net for some time now but I have not been able to find any definite answers.

It's a little hard to know for certain if it will work without some modifications. It can be made to work though, and chances are you don't need to do any modifications to it and that it just works. So go ahead and buy it.

Physically the pin connections are completely the same, and it will definitely work in the R60 if the display EDID details are present and correct. Can you use the R60 using an external monitor? If so, boot it up, download and install Phoenix EDID designer: http://www.tucows.com/preview/329441 start the program and click Tools > Extract Registry EDID > Click LEN40XX (where X is a number) and choose "Extract EDID". Click File > Save EDID as..., and save it to a file somewhere. You might need this EDID, or some parts of it after you swap in the new screen, so it's nice to have a copy of the EDID in handy in case you need it.

Ok, I can definitely do that. What should I do with this EDID if it doesn't work right away?

I've managed to find the EDID from the orignal panel, using 'xrandr --verbose' on Ubuntu. Is there any way to flash the EDID to the new panel with Linux, like you can do on Windows with PowerStrip?

Anybody visiting the thread - PLEASE help building EDID and panel compatibility database! Someday you might need it as we do today!

1. read the EDID extraction and LCD model determination manual
2. Post your screen data in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=29&t=82149
THANK YOU!

I just got the panel from the T42. I found the old EDID using the xrandr --verbose command on Ubuntu. Then I replaced the panel, installed Windows on a separate hard drive on the R60 using an external display. I then installed PowerStrip, and chose to 'Update the EDID'. I was a bit worried that it might overwrite the EDID of my external monitor, but when I chose to 'Read EDID directly from monitor' it displayed the correct info for the T42 panel. I then figured that writing an EDID would overwrite the info in the new panel as well and I proceeded. After a reboot, everything worked like a charm.

Thanks for the help!

Oh my god, i'm really just completely blind and forgetful of where i post replies. Separate smaller threads are much easier to handle, because one can see that they made a reply which, judging from the number of replies isn't too long ago. With this thread it shows that i made a reply - but the first one i made was many pages ago. So jt.waleson, i'm very sorry for not replying. If it happens again someday, don't hesitate to send a PM.

Glad you got it to work correctly - Powerstrip is indeed the easiest way to re-program the eeprom, instead of messing with custom cables and I2C interfaces. As for Linux utilities (although you won't need it now) I2ctools package (http://www.lm-sensors.org/wiki/I2CTools) might be a possibility, but i'm not sure how to use it.

No problem, it worked out fine. Thanks for the reply.

A question regarding the LCD panels that fit into a 15.4" widescreen T60.

Do panels from a 15.4" Z60m fit and work? I have a very nice, albeit TN, LG-Philips WSXGA+ panel in my Z60m and am looking to move up to a T60ws. I'm hoping that I can get a [easily found] T60ws with WXGA screen, and swap it around with the WSXGA+ panel in my Z.

For what it's worth, the part number of my Z60m WSXGA+ screen is an LG-Philips LP154W02(TL)(06).

I assume that the physical dimensions will be identical (or close enough to it); I'm just wondering if the screw holes will line up, and won't have to bother with double-sided tape like in an X60 SXGA+ conversion.

EDIT: yay! The Z60m FRU matches the T60 FRU listed in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=29&t=82149 - and my panel has EDID data (checked using http://www.entechtaiwan.com/util/moninfo.shtm).

Absolutely. Panels from Z60m/Z60t/Z61e/Z61m/Z61t/Z61p models can be shared with newer machines.

Yep, picked up a T60ws this evening and swapped the panels over just then. You can easily see why the big Ts feel more sturdy than the 15" Zs... I think there was about twice as many screws and clips in the LCD assembly!

Greetings,
Thank you all for the Years of insight into an elusive product, the best LCD screen panel for the T60/T60p.

Type :- After reading through the Post/Threads, I surmise that it is general consensus that the better screen panel is the BOE HyDis HV150UX1-100 UXGA 1600x1200. Recently there was a Listing for this item but unfortunately it was all sold and I was one Hour too late.

Availability :- In my endeavour to seek out this panel, I found a Taiwan company, CGSP Technology Corporation, at present they have approximately 320 "New Old Stock" made in 2008. They also have a ebay Listing under the username of cgsplcd. They ship Worldwide and accepts various forms of Payment.

http://www.cgsp.com.tw/cgsp/product_info.php?cPath=37&products_id=1962

Discussions :- These exact screen panels were recently sold by a member of this Forum, also confirmed replaced/tested by other members.

Just bought a T60p 15" UXGA Flexview Boe-Hydis, machine type 2007-AD1. I also have a T42p with ID-Tech UXGA 15" screen. T60p was made in 06/05, T42p - in 05/10. The T42p was in heavy use (12.000 hours of use according to HDD SMART). I don't have information about the worked time of T60p, but I am sure that it is much shorter than the T42p.
Here is my comparison of these screens:
- The Boe-Hydis has noticeable higher contrast
- White color on Boe-Hydis has blue tint, while ID-Tech has yellow tint (IMO due to the it's heavy use).
- Max brightness is a bit higher in Boe-Hydis. I am sure if the two LCDs are new, the ID-Tech will have higher brightness.
- The Boe-Hydis has much more glance effect.
- The Boe-Hydis has much lower viewing angles, both vertical and horizontal. When I look directly to the center, the sides of the screen appear dimmer due to the low viewing angle. This is the most disappointed feature I found in the Boe-Hydis screen.
- In overall, the ID-Tech is easier for my eyes for reading text. So I prefer to work on T42p (it also has NMB keyboard, while T60p has ALPS one)

What's a good source for a 14.1 SXGA screen for a T60?

I was hoping to find a full top with bluetooth and the 3rd antenna for N but it's pretty slim pickings plus every seller claims everything they are selling is "Like New".

I am thinking buying a new screen is going to be the way to go, but I don't want to get junk.

What's a good source for a 14.1 SXGA screen for a T60?

I was hoping to find a full top with bluetooth and the 3rd antenna for N but it's pretty slim pickings plus every seller claims everything they are selling is "Like New".

Yeah also looking for a new screen for T60 14.1" with maximum resolution possible. Got one with 1024x768 right now.

so someone maybe know if the T61p widescreen LG Philips LP154WU1 fits and works also in the T60p widescreen machines? ... or do i need to make changes to the bios or EDID or whatever?

Hello,

I hope it's the right topic to give this information :

I swapped my screen on my T60. I have a 1952-43G, with a GMA945 and XGA screen.

I bought the screen of a 2007-EH7 (laptop with X1300 and SXGA+).

Everything works fine.

And the screen is brand new ! :)

W.

I've been on the hunt for an IPS T60p for a while but none of them have the v5250 with 512mb RAM. Were they never configured this way?

I currently have a 15.4" T60p with the 512 card and I don't want to downgrade as I do a lot of photo editing and SW/CAD work. I read that the C2D chip can be swapped in to a 15" mobo, is this straight plug and play? And is a 15" IPS with the v5250/512mb a unicorn?

This laptop is almost perfect but I really want the screen for photo editing but don't want to give up the vRAM. I've never been so impressed and happy with a laptop before.

Also, any tips on what to look for regarding the IPS displays? I've read that they generally don't age too well and start yellowing and dimming. What about aftermarket IPS panels that can be swapped in to a 15" chassis?

What about the 14" IPS? Is the battery life better on these? I've seen them come with C2D but did they ever have the 5250/512? I feel like there should be a list or timeline of these laptops somewhere.

No such thing as 14" IPS...

And some late 15" IPS machines do have V5250...

I'm trying to replace the 15.4" LCD on my T60, I have the HMM and a video showing how to do it, but I ran into a couple problems:

1-those little teeny itty bitty screws that hold the frame sides to the panel: how do you start them? I can barely see them! But after fumbling around for a half hour I finally got them started, only to discover,

2-the main cable fell out of the socket on the back of the LCD! The white tape that's supposed to hold them together lost it's sticky. What should I use? I'm looking at the clear celluloid strapping tape, right now.

Any good-sticking tape will do. If all else fails, even duct tape will do the trick.
Leave the old tape in place. Get a new piece of tape about twice as long as the original one.
Start the new piece at the bottom of the old tape, going on upwards and ending on the white plastic LCD backcover.
Don't press too hard on it!
