Wifi antenna orientation [T61p]

#1 Post by dhave » Thu Jul 15, 2010 6:45 am

I encountered this problem with my T43 a few years back and now again with my T61p.

I've just started using a Lenovo dock for my T61p. It works as advertised. There is one problem, however.

Since I have a flat panel monitor, external keyboard and mouse attached, I like to keep the T61p closed. When I do this, however, the wifi antenna doesn't work nearly as well. I believe this is because the orientation of the antenna, which I believe is located behind the lcd panel is horizontal rather than vertical when the laptop lid is closed. It especially makes a difference at the outer fringe of my wifi router's range.

Other than using a second wifi adapter, does anyone know of a solution?

Thanks.

Keep the lid open and just turn the laptop LCD off?

Disable power management functions on the wireless adapter (which may boost signal strength)?

The way my workspace is set up, I can't really have the laptop open if I'm using my big flat-panel monitor.

That's something that hadn't occurred to me. Thanks.
