Thinkpad X24 RAM upgrade (beep 1-3-1)

#1 Post by x220 » Sat Oct 25, 2014 3:03 pm

Hi,

I recently bought a Thinkpad X24 off ebay for £10, after installing a hard drive it appears to work quite well although I will replace a few of the plastics as the screen bezel/lid have seen better days.

When it arrived it had no ram installed (just the 128MB on-board), so I added a 256MB PC-100 chip to it, with the chip in I get nothing on screen, 1 short beep followed by 3 short beeps followed by another short beep (1-3-1), without the PC-100 chip installed it boots and runs fine.

I've tried 3 different PC-100 chips which have all worked fine in my T20's.

Does the X24 only take PC-133 chips or am I missing something simple?

Yes, it's that simple. X24 requires PC133 memory modules.

edit: Since you may also run other Thinkpads of this vintage...

T20-T22, X20-X21 takes PC100 or PC133 "low density" memory. For 256MB modules, that's 16 chips on the board; 128MB modules = 8 chips
T23, X22-24 takes only PC133 memory

Thank you, that's a pain, I've got a few spare PC-100s, the only PC-133 I have that can be switched with PC-100 are in a Thinkpad web server, I daren't destroy the uptime of that so... back to ebay it is for some PC-133, at least that way I can make sure I get a 512MB chip for it :D

Edit: Thank you for adding the additional information, that will no doubt come in handy as I own a few laptops from that era (and intend to own more over time)

Also it may be worth noting that the T20 can sometimes work with PC-133 as long as it is in slot 2 and their is a PC-100 chip in slot 1.
