Kingspec ssd users? (Pic Warning)

#1 Post by phr » Tue May 19, 2009 11:10 am

Anyone using this drive in an x40/41 yet? How is it working out for you? Where did you buy it (if ebay, which dealer)? I've looked at some of the other threads about it and looks very promising, especially since my almost-new Hitachi 60gb drive is developing bad sectors. CF solutions look unattractive and I was about to retire my x40 and buy an x200s ($$$$$$$). But if the Kingspec drive is as good as it sounds, it could keep my x40 usable for a while longer. Thanks for any thoughts.

I got a 32GB KingSpec SSD in a X41 laptop. I also have a X41 tablet, and now I wish had a SSD in it too. The speed difference of the SSD is nice, but I don't think that alone is the real selling point for me. The total silence, the no extra heat which means the fan runs less, and the ability to handle the laptop roughly while using it without ill effect is the real benefit to me.

The only time you really notice the speed difference is when you load a large program or reboot, but then I guess it depends on how you use your laptop. The only reason I have not ordered another Kingspec is that I want to see what the price of a faster G-Monster SSD is going to be when it becomes available. http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=76584

The G-monster is about 2x as expensive as the Kingspec. I just can't see spending that much. The x40 is a nice machine but it is something like 5 years old and only worth a few hundred dollars. Spending $500 on a G-monster ssd doesn't seem so cost effective, compared to buying an X60/61 or X200/200S and being able to use your choice of any SATA laptop drive, plus get a much faster cpu and various other advances. I see the Kingspec SSD mainly as a way to keep the X40 alive for a while longer, so my main concern is for its reliability. The other thing is there are several ebay sellers so I'm wondering which ones people here have dealt with, ebay being such a scam haven.

I have an 8GB RiDATA 233x in a X41 and have a 32GB version of the same card on the way, only $76 plus S/H from Newegg. A bit slower in write than a true SSD but fast enough for me.

So your total with 32GB CF, CF-to-IDE converter, and shipping is about $90 vs a $150 SSD? That sounds like a good deal if your just looking to spiff up an old laptop.

I'm very skeptical that the Ritek 233x CF card is "a bit slower in write" than the Kingspec drive, if the Kingspec crystalmark measurements I saw are accuarate. The Kingspec seems to do small random writes (4k) at around 2M/sec while the Ritek CF card is likely at least 30x slower. Sequential write speed (the number everyone advertises because it's big and looks impressive) matters a lot less than small random write speed for preventing stuttering and making the laptop snappy. Maybe someone has benchmarked the Ritek card someplace. If the Kingspec is as good as it sounds (this is the part I'm not sure of), then it's well worth the extra $60.

You can read my test results in this thread:

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=71881

Data aside, real use is what counts. Currently I have the following:

X41+8GB RiDATA 233x CF card plus IDE-CF adapter
X30+32GB Transcend MLC SSD

The RiDATA card had been in a X40 for about 6 months. Worked fine as a coffee shop web browsing machine. Running XP it was too small to be anything else. I am hoping the 32GB version can give a feel of more general purpose computing.

The Transcend MLC SSD is fast but not exceedingly so in terms of real use in a computer. Good thing it was only $75 when I bought it. Now it is around $90.

Kingspec SSD at 1.5x for a no name and just being in a smaller housing is too expensive. It will be good to see posts here about how cheap it is. It is border line ridiculous putting a $150 drive in a $200 computer. The Samsung HS122JC is also one of those. But at least it gives you decent capacity and decent performance.

p.s.:
If Transcend can make a profit on $90 supporting a branded 32GB MLC SSD product, why can't Kingspec being a low cost no name company support a $90 pricing. :banghead:
All of us X40/X41 owners are waiting for the day when someone spotted a Kingspec 32GB deal for $75 and post it here. Then everyone will just run out and get one.

The Transcend 32gb PATA drive seems to now be $109.95 at newegg. Yeah it would be nice if the Kingspec were the same price but you've got to figure it's a very specialized item. I'm amazed that anyone bothered to make something like that at all, just to keep the handful of old x40's and a few old mp3 players happy. $150 shipped from China seems like a pretty reasonable price by that standard. Also, someone in the other x41 ssd thread said they are $103 direct from the manufacturer in qty 10, so maybe some folks here could do a group buy. I'd be in for one if I don't buy one through an ebay dealer first. Actually I'm going back and forth about spending another 90 bucks to get the 64gb, though I probably don't need the space. As I see it, my x40 hd is going bad and can't easily be replaced, but with the Kingspec drive the x40 will stay a pretty nice machine for another year or two. With a CF card, I think it would be barely usable for anything involving writing out a lot of small files (this happens whenever you compile code, for example). With no upgrade at all, I'd have to buy another travel machine, probably an X200s at $1000+. It's been tempting me and it's a nice machine, but I'm sure in another year there will be something even nicer, with built-in HDMI for example.

The Ridata CF card in your other thread measures 0.038 MB/sec at 4k random writes, which is about 40x slower than the Kingspec and 500x slower than an Intel X25-M (considered the first really good SSD that's not insanely expensive). For workloads like web surfing (very little small file writing) I guess the CF card could be ok. For more file intensive tasks I'd expect it to be awfully slow, like the EEE PC 701 that I sometimes use.

As you can see from that Benchmark thread, there are a lot of options that doesn't cost a lot. I will add the acquisition cost of each option in the next turn.

Web browsing actually writes a lot of little files.

The RiDATA 233x actual did ok; not fast, but usable. Worst case was that Kingston 133x 8GB card. Pretty useless in running OS.

As for your comment about not having options for X40/X41, here are my rough acquisition cost for 1.8 inch storage devices:

Hitachi 20GB, $20
Hitachi 40GB, $30
Hitachi 60GB, $45
Samsung 40GB, $23 (eventually broke)
Samsung 80GB, $50
Samsung 120GB, $120
RiDATA 8GB 233x CF card, $40 about 6 months ago
RiDATA 32GB 233x CF card, $76 ordered

All of the HDDs are ZIF and require a IDE-ZIF adapter and CFs require IDE-CF adapter.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/ ... N9820a.gif

And my X series computers:

X41 Tablet, 60GB (soon 120GB HDD)
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/ ... 10copy.gif
X41, 8GB CF (soon 80GB HDD)
X40, 40GB HDD (soon 32GB CF)
X32, 100GB HDD
X30, 32GB MLC SSD
X20, 40GB 1.8 inch HDD

And no, Kingspec SSD is not in my future, at least not at $150.

Thanks, that is interesting. I hadn't really thought about trying to use a ZIF drive, though I was vaguely aware that it could be done. I see there are a lot of "1.8" zif to 2.5" ide" adapters on ebay that seem to consist of a little circuit board with an IDE plug and about 2 inches of ribbon cable. Is that what you're using to install a zif drive in an x40? How do you do it--are you saying the ribbon cable can bend around enough, and there is enough space alongside or above the zif drive, to fit the whole thing into the little x40 drive bay? Or do you use some other method of adapting the zif drive?

I'm still somewhat inclined to buy the kingspec drive if people are using them w/o problems. As I see it, $110 for a 32gb ssd with decent random write performance is more attractive than $75 for a 32gb cf card with terrible random write performance, and then a $40 premium for the ssd to fit in the somewhat obscure Hitachi 1.8" form factor isn't too unreasonable either. The total $150 expenditure isn't out of line given that the x40 is still nicer than most $400 netbooks. Before the Kingspec got noticed here, I had been thinking of getting a Transcend 8gb 300x SLC CF card for $80 or so, and supplementing it with a 32gb MLC card (Addonics dual slot CF adapter, or else just use an SDHC card) for stuff like media files.

But, the idea of using a zif hd is intriguing. There are tons of old ipods with those drives, so the next expensive x40 part to fail is probably the battery. I'll worry about that when it happens.

Yes, the flex cable is bent to fit in the X40/X41 HDD slot. The original Hitachi drives are 9.5mm thick, and the ZIF drives can be:

Samsung 40GB/80GB, 5mm
Hitachi 20GB, 7mm
Samsung 120GB, 8mm
Hitachi 40GB/60GB, 9.5mm

Even fitting the 9.5mm Hitachi drives are no problem. I would like to try a Toshiba drive at some point.

I have been using that 32GB CF card with Win7 RC on a X40 for a few days. Here is a post on the setup:
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=57&t=76794
Even with very slow random small file performance, usability of this RiDATA 32GB CF card is ok. Since the 8GB version had been used for a few months, this 32GB card should work fine too.

I have the ircube dual slot CF adapter and it doesn't work as a boot device. So I am using the single slot version.

Next time I will be in Hong Kong, I will look for that Asax or Kingspec SSD. Yes, X40 is very nice given how low power it can be. CF card or a SSD helps in that regard.

I've been using the X40 (768MB/Win XP pro) with a 32Gb Kingspec (MLC) drive since 2 weeks.

Setting up the drive right was not so easy. Partition alignment, and right FAT32 cluster size had to be set correctly. Without doing this, I had small lag issues. Installation was easy, no other issues, and the X40 really flies!!!!

THe difference is amazing. Everything became really snappy. Example: Photoshop CS3 startup time is 5 sec after boot (nothing cached in RAM).
I will make a video how fast the whole system response is ..... soon...

Image

p.s. I am using FAT32, because with NTFS my XP install did not complete with proper partition alignment (falied to restart), and I had no time to find out what the problem was. FAT32 is ok for 32GB anyway... Works fine now...

I have received my Kingspec 64 GB SSD yesterday. The original HDD was cloned to the SSD, thus I am using NTFS. The performance numbers for this disk in my system (Windows XP 32bit, X40, 1.5 GB RAM, 1.4 GHz Dothan) are as follows:

--------------------------------------------------
CrystalDiskMark 2.2 (C) 2007-2008 hiyohiyo
Crystal Dew World : http://crystalmark.info/
--------------------------------------------------

Sequential Read : 80.548 MB/s
Sequential Write : 45.584 MB/s
Random Read 512KB : 77.813 MB/s
Random Write 512KB : 35.340 MB/s
Random Read 4KB : 13.029 MB/s
Random Write 4KB : 2.199 MB/s

Test Size : 100 MB
Date : 2009/05/27 13:41:04

Performance overall has improved quite a bit for the applications I use (Office, Outlook Express, Google Chrome, Skype, Matlab R2007b). For most applications except Matlab, it is now hard to tell the difference between my X40 and my main workstation (Windows XP 64bit, 16 GB RAM, Quad Core)
There is one apparent drawback, though. The laptop altogether seems to consume more power now than before. The minimum power draw according to the NHC measurements (CPU undervolted, display brightness minimal, Modem, LAN and WLAN off) used to be about 7.5-8.5 Watts. Now I am rather at 9.5-10.5 Watts minimum. From the stated specifications, power consumption of the SSD and my original 40GB HDD should not be that different.

By "Chinese version of eBay", I meant taobao.com

I'm not sure if you can navigate it without knowing any Chinese through.

Hi Guys,

I've found KingSpec 64GB str8 form UK's ebay for 149£, it took one day to get it delivered :D . Nice, no need to wait week or two like form china and its cheaper not to worry about customs etc. I''' test it tonight and I'll post my results. I'm not sure if I can paste any links here. If not please remove it and I'm sorry in advance. Just want to help the others looking for a similar drive in UK.

Hello again,

Sorry it took so long, I had some issues installing OS X but now everything is sorted.
I've installed three operating systems on my KingSpec KSD-PA18.1-064MJ:

1 - Windows 7 RC
2 - OS X Leopard 10.5.1
3 - Windows XP SP3

I use a GRUB to manage all the OSs.

Lets start with Windows 7. It takes 28 sec to boot it up, the system is very stable, never got frozen. It works nice and smooth.

OS X - It takes 9 sec to boot up WOW. All the applications open instantly what else can I say It's awesome.

Windows XP. It takes 20sec to boot up. The performance pretty much the same as above. I'm absolutely amazed. My X41 is so quiet now and the battery life has jumped up by almost one hour on single charge.

I also downloaded three different benchmark tools to come up with some numbers. Please see below:

Just bought Kingspec 32GB PATA directly from KingSpec, China.

Quotation as below,
> KSD-PA18.1-032MJ USD103/PC
> KSD-PA18.1-064MJ USD187/PC

Payment thru Western Union. They send out the item once they picked the monies.

I received the SSD. Now figuring out, how the best way to clone the SSD from my x41 HDD.
Tried to GHOST the partition directly to SSD but it doesn't work --> No OS found.

Any recommendation of the best methods of cloning it.

Old HDD in the Ultrabase/drive tray, new SSD in the HDD slot, cloning software in an USB CD drive. After cloning, if the SSD still doesn't boot, do a F11 recovery operation.

I've received the 32 GB version of the Kingspec SSD last week and I've been trying to get proper speed out of the drive with my X40 but without success. I've tried Windows 7 RC, but because of the lacking video drivers I'm now switched back to Win XP Pro 32 bit. Both operating systems gave me similar speeds, which were too low compared to what other users have reported.

I've tried the drive with out of the box settings and partitioned/formatted the drive multiple times with (afaik) proper cluster alignment, all gave same low score, especially with sequential read. I've created the partition using vista recovery cd's diskpart utility and done a fresh OS install from a DVD.

The current specs are below, any ideas what I've done wrong here?
Also, could someone please report the offsets, allocation unit sizes and filesystems that you are using to get proper scores?

Laptop: IBM X40, 1,5GB memory
OS: WinXP Pro 32 bit

Thx sjthinkpader.

B4 I'm able to follow yr advice, I already did some cloning & trying to install a fresh WinXP Pro on the SSD but now ended having the MBR/Boot Sector kind of "corrupted"(maybe, I'm not sure).

1. I tried to install a fresh WinXp on the X41 with the SSD but some blue screen appeared after 1st reboot. Hard rebooted a few time, same thing happened. Did not took down the blue screen text message.
- I then tried to re-install the freshWinXP again but this time it cannot be
installed. It gave this error:

Windows XP Professional Setup
-----------------------------

An error occurred while Setup was updating partition information on:
30728 MB DIsk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on atapi [MBR]
Setup cannot continue. To quit Setup, press F3.

=======================================================

2. Next, I tried to clone the SSD with my original HDD using GHOST
but I encountered the following error:

Application Error 29005
------------------------

Write sector failure, result=1, drive=0, sectors 6291519 to 6291583
========================================================

3. I'm not really sure what it is but seems to indicate error or failure on the MBR area of the hardware.

4. I CHKDSK using WinXP's DOS, it stopped half-way indicating some damaged on certain volume. But i'm not sure this was the right application to check the SSD.

5. I then tried to FIXMBR using WinXp's DOS, it failed to update &
indicated that the MBR area is damaged. Again, I'm not sure this is the right
application to use.

6. I had tried different methods & application to delete and re-build the MBR . I had tried to use:

i. Partition Magic to delete the partition but failed.
- It error on writing to the boot sector.

ii. DOS 6, using FDISK to delete the partition also failed.
- It showed the partition as Non-DOS partition.
- To re-write MBR also failed (FDISK /cmbr 1).

iii. Partition Doctor to rebuild MBR also failed. It cannot write to the Boot
sector/MBR.

I can access the partition (as slave drive). It shows as an NTFS Partition. Data can be read/write on this partition but cannot access/do changes on the boot sector/MBR area.

Can anyone suggest any 3rd party application that can set the SSD to the factory setting or rebuid the MBR/Boot Sector . There is not much information on the WEB regarding SSD issues. Maybe, cause it is still new.
I need HELP!! :{

Specs: 32GB Kingspec + X40 +1.5GB RAM.
Installation method: Used Acronis True Image to clone the old HDD.

Impressions: very nice to have a silent drive.....
speed during computer use? I haven't noticed much improvement... I'm really surprised when I hear people saying that the differences are huge.
Any lag? definitely YES, it's not frequent, but it does happen.
Current: X200, X40
Past: T42, 600E

Some are from the initial excitment and some could be sellers trying to generate publicity.

I think this generation of SSDs from smaller manufacturers all have the infamous JMicron controller inside. The lag is from data overflow of the smallish cache in the controller during write operation. But PATA and 1.8 inch format may not get the next generation. For 2.5 inch, article writers already saying these drivers are not worth the money.

It will be good to get a PATA-SATA adapter or try the direct SATA mod. Newer SATA drives coming out have much larger write cache.

If you contact Kingspec directly they will sell you one. Its a wire transfer to them and shipping was about 25 bucks. I ordered a 64gb from them and am quite happy with it. Running windows 7 on my X40 and it is quite snappy.

Hi, anyone knows either this KingFast ssd is compatible with IBM x40/41 series laptop or not. Because i found this model quite cheap compared to other model. Can someone proof either the transfer speed of the ssd is as stated which is read: 300mb/s and write: 200mb/s. If it's true the speed is really amazing. Here's the link KingFast Ssd

KingFast is the same as KingSpec SSD. Exactly the same.
