X61 replacement battery woes
X61 replacement battery woes
Hi, I'm in the UK and I have a trusty X61 that I have had for a few years and has been upgraded over this time
(Middleton bios, 4Gb mem, SSD, Mini WiFi card, Win 10 - BTW, runs way cooler on this!).
Anyway, the battery is the thing that bugs me the most. It is an aftermarket 6 cell that now only holds 33% of
what it should. I've been looking for a 4 cell 2600MAH battery for a while now and was very pleased to see
some new/old stock Lenovo's 40Y7001's on UK ebay for £30 each! So I snapped one up.
Sadly, although both sealed and genuine, the battery I got was DOA. When installed in my X61 it just sat at '0' % charging,
with a blinking orange battery icon for 6 hours (tried different genuine lenovo chargers too). It had been manufactured in
June 2013, so perhaps it had just self discharged to below it's recovery threshold in storage.
So my quest for a good 2600 MAH 4 cell continues. I am doubtful whether I will find a genuine Lenovo 2600 MAH 4 cell 40Y7001
that wasn't either dead from storage or at the end of it's service life, so Aliexpress beckons...
I would love to be able to get a 'Kingsener' 4 cell battery for my X61, but they do not list one on on their site.
I have contacted them to enquire if an X61 battery is possible, awaiting reply, but not hopeful.
In the meantime, I have found two possible alternatives, that both claim to use Korean or Japanese cells,
and proport to be 2600 MAH:
'Emerging' sounds good, but I don't like the 'had to hammer it in' review comment:

Also, have any X61 owner got any other good tips as to where to get a reputable 2600 MAH 4 cell X60/61 battery?
I'm in the UK, so any US supplier would be a non starter as the shipping costs would kill it. Are there any other reputable
Chinese manufacturers on Aliexpress that I should look at? if anyone can advise me where I could get a good,
solid, genuine 2600 MAH capacity X61 4 cell battery I would be very grateful.
Are there enough X61 owners out there interested in a 4 Cell 2600 MAh (or maybe more, with the improved
battery tech these days!) to discus some kind of group buy with Kingsener? I'd be in for one of those for sure!

Fitted well in my X61, no need to hammer it in Doing a few charge/discharge tests at the moment,
but looks good for around 90 mins so far. Well pleased for a four cell at a reasonable ($23) price. Delivery was around 4 weeks.

It all comes down to what you need.
The form factor is the deciding fact. Be it a 4-cell form or an 8-cell form, you must first decide if you feel good with an extra bump or not.
A good 4-cell for 4000 mA should give in theory 90 min of uptime, but that depends so much on HDD vs SDD, screen light intensity, demands of the user, for instance usb dongles for mouses or wifi access when needed, that it is a moot point in my opinion.
Also I find mostly either 4-cell form factors giving 2200 mA for 18 to 30 euros, or 8-cell form factor batteries giving either 4400 mA or 5200 mA from 30 to 65 euros, depending on cell quality used in the build. Most cells are reported to be SANYO-made, Li type. Wanting to have my trusty typewriter available at all times during a flight, I packed a pair of 8 cell-form 4400 mA for 65 euros and I have been getting more or less 1hour and 30 min out of each once they are toped up.
Note that I do quite a lot to drain those as I can write for the entire flight (3 hours), check files residing on my phone and copy them over via BT, do some math calculus, and save multiple times. Also, the RAM is limited to 4GB which by necessity drags power from buffer SSD use by the OS.

I would always get the biggest battery I can find just to be able to keep working at my own leisure. Should you need a lighter machine though, the 4-cell design is the way to go, just do not hope to squeeze more than an hour top top out of it, with a restrained use. I would advise for green cell manufacturers if you can get thos in the UK. Or you can shop over here in Greece if you feel like it. I often try and find shops abroad and pay the postal price in the EU if I cannot get what I need next door or in-country.
See size vs duration. Also if you skip win 10 for a linux or FreeDos install, should your needs be such, you can milk this battery for almost 20% more. On Win 10 try and kill everything online-worthy, it is a battery devourer.

I would always get the biggest battery I can find just to be able to keep working at my own leisure. Should you need a lighter machine though, the 4-cell design is the way to go, just do not hope to squeeze more than an hour top top out of it, with a restrained use. I would advise for green cell manufacturers if you can get thos in the UK. Or you can shop over here in Greece if you feel like it. I often try and find shops abroad and pay the postal price in the EU if I cannot get what I need next door or in-country.
See size vs duration. Also if you skip win 10 for a linux or FreeDos install, should your needs be such, you can milk this battery for almost 20% more. On Win 10 try and kill everything online-worthy, it is a battery devourer.

I have this on my KingSener batt for X230 too. Don't think it means anything. It's just a string of characters battery firmware sends to Thinkpad. Probably they copied firmware byte to byte from a Sanyo made bettery but more likely they wanted to avoid trouble with Lenovo code running in Embedded Controller (EC) and Lenovo drivers/utilities running on the main CPU as part of the OS. Probably with BIOS too. So they set this string to match as closely as possible to what some original battery returns. Don't think it is linked to the brand of the cells at all, even if they happen to be SanyoMANUFACTURER SANYO
But it doesn't matter! What matters is that battery works well. Could you please share which aftermarket "brands" you prefer? Specific sellers on Aliexpress or eBay? Thx!

I actually buy my batteries in-country most of the time. I almost never use Ali or ebay, since I care mostly about being able to give a phone call to request servicing if needed. It probably costs me more than getting them from China but that is just me.

I usually get green cells maker if I can get one. Money is a question of cell quality. Issue with most chinese manufacturers is that capacity is really a pure nominal issue. I have seen a cheap 20 euro battery last me for two hours and a 60 euro battery dying on me after one month of use on the same machine. So I prefer to go with local shops that give me a year warranty and exchange it for a new one. If I have no issue in a month, usually the batteries are good to go.
Batteries are a painful thing really, since there are so many duds out there, and the worst issue are cell quality and electronics build quality inside, which you can never know about, in essence you are always buying a black box.
For me, if I NEED to work with a battery, I go the full monty about it, spending-wise, since I consider worst to be dead in the water without power. Otherwise, it is just a matter of having the battery as an add-on for the comings and goings from one room to another, and then even a small 20 min worth of battery can last you years of use. Plug the AC out change rooms, plug it in, then sit and continue...Or just get up, show the screen to the people in next room, then return.
I have no real preference. Usually I buy one, ask the vendor if he has the same batch in stock, then test the one I got, and if happy, will get another one. I am presently juggling 8 batteries on various machines just to keep them alive.
Also if I really have to, there are pretty good battery refurbishers around here, pricey, but they can make what I need if needed.

And about RAM, I know 8GB would be nice, but there is no way I would buy them for the price they go right now. I see them around the 100USD mark which is just insane, I bought a pair about 2 or 3 years ago for exactly half of that.

I'm verry sorry for necroposting here, but as we tend to use laptops around here and batteries are significant, i wanted to bring my own view into it (i'm also currently clearing out lot of "stuff" such as old batteries, etc for thinkpads and others).
I got one of the "Green cell" packs a few years back (8-cell variety) after having used the 4-cell version (2 iterations of clones and before that the original one) and i'm honestly not overly impressed by it. Its life-span is nowhere near the one of the original battery. Indeed, it will hold 3+ hours when new, but the performance will deteriorate rather quickly (this is just my own reflection here mind you...).
I ended up getting yet another 4-cell to replace it (which i'm charging up now to check the health of - but i will remove it later and check what manufacturer) and it has last the longest i think (3 years pushing).
In summary, i support the notion of "hit or miss" here. You never know until you try it.
(it became a little bit like the movie inception here when writing about this thing, which visually is writing about this thing... )

The latest battery that i had in (and now charged 100% which seem to be working just fine) was a German brand called "Patona". I will check how long it lasts during normal use definately.
I swapped in my "Green cell" battery (8-cell) but it has been stuck on 1% for quite some time now so I'm deeming it as a lost cause (going to the recycling facility).
I swapped in my "Green cell" battery (8-cell) but it has been stuck on 1% for quite some time now so I'm deeming it as a lost cause (going to the recycling facility).
