prehistory OSX 10.2.8

#1 Post by taichi » Sun Feb 01, 2015 6:57 pm

I have some of my writing on a clone of a Mac OSX 10.2.8 installed on an external hard drive. I no longer have the working G4 from which the clone was made, and am wondering whether it's possible to open up and extract files through some form of emulation on my ThinkPad. My ThinkPad is a legacy T60P running Vista 32 Ultimate.

I have a newer HP which runs Vista 64 Ultimate.

Or would it be better to pick up an inexpensive G4 or G5 to access the drive?

Thanks

This might work for you: http://www.catacombae.org/hfsexplorer/

I had some experience many years ago reading Mac-formatted floppies on a PC so I have an idea what's involved.

So this would permit me to plug the drive with the clone on it into the USB port, and be read like any other external drive?

If you want to clone the drive instead of just getting off some files from it, i'd rather suggest booting some suitable Linux live system from CD/USB on your machine and copy one of the hard drives to the other using the dd command. It doesn't copy on file level, but all sectors of a given drive, regardless what they contain. Not even the the file system requires to be read and understood. This way you can create exact clones of any hard drive.

Simplified sample command:

Code: Select all

dd if=/dev/sdy of=/dev/sdz
where /dev/sdy refers to the input drive and /dev/sdz to the output target drive. Adapt as required after googling for more detailed information how to clone a drive using the dd command.
A few 14.1" and 15" T61+ Frankenpads and one T480

From reading the description of the HFSExplorer software, yes. Please note that I have not personally used this program; I only found it by searching on how to access Mac drives using a PC. You may want to contact the author of the program and confirm that it will work for your situation. His email is at the bottom of the page I linked you to.

I'll do that. Installation in Windows seems simple, but there is a complicating bit about possibly needing to create partitions, which I'm reluctant to do.

and to rumbero...
I don't need to clone a drive, as the hard drive contains a clone of my retired G4. But thanks for your response.

I did ponder getting a cheap PowerPC G5off of CL, and just opening the drive on that.
