X230 fan in X220?

#1 Post by apojoga » Wed Feb 01, 2023 8:42 pm

Hi,

The fan in my beloved X220 has started rattling and I will need a new one. Are X230 fans different but compatible? A reddit post suggests they have thicker pipes?

If this is possible, a recommendation for the quietest FRU would be greatly appreciated.

TIA.

Have you tried cleaning the heatsink and lubricating the fan axle? Sometimes the rattling is due to dust that has built up inside, and lubricating the fan axle can extend its life.

And to answer your question: yes, you can use an X230 heatsink on an X220, though the fan units themselves might be different. No idea which one is quieter though.

Thank you very much for your reply. I will try to lubricate it, but a brand new one will do nicely. :D

I should just get an X220 assembly in that case, to be safe.

Hi, I have got a X220 (configured exactly as yours!), and a X230. In my case the X230 fan seems to be much quieter than the X220 one, but no idea about FRUs
