My SL410 was infected by virus and turned into blue screen. The blue screen indicated the laptop was dumping the physical memory and then restarted. Hence, after rebooted I could only access to the very first screen with Thinkpad logo then froze. No way to get into Win 7 save mode and no response on the blue recovery button. I took out the harddrive and it could be loaded on other computer. It shouldn't be any physical damage but just the virus ruined the Win 7. I didn't create a recovery disc for my SL410 but my cousin do have a disc for T410. I wonder if this disc for T410 is compatible with SL410? If the answer is negative, can I recover my thinkpad with an universal Win 7 32 bit disc and then download all drivers & tool from Lenovo's official site? thank you in advance~

Hi cam*;
SL = older pent proc and T410 probably has the newer i series
so there might be a few(lots) of driver(s) that need updating.

I would suggest you try this ( done a few of these over the years)

1) get new hard drive for Sl410
2) Install into SL 410
3) USE T410 recover disk to install windows ( you can change keys after install to mach the bottom of machine if u like) > generally you will get a few 'errors' etc ,, jsut ignore them ,,,
as long WINDOWS BOOTS and works!!
4) after install - creat user etc ( tip = make EXECT SAME NAMES as before)
5) FIRST FIRST thing to download = Lenovo System Update 4.0X
After install - RUN that and DO INSTALL ALL of the HARDWARE DRIVERS FIRST !!!
( leave any 'apps" behind for now
6) Install WIndows SP1 etc
7) now go back and install rest of UPDATES via as u did in step5

You can NOW copy and data from other hard drive via USB connection - oh yeah , I would use 10 different virus + spyware apps to check BEFORE transfer !!

Lots of works manauly = but this method has worked for over 20+ tps for me in last .....forgot count by ooooldman !! Lol

cheers

Thanks for the info.

I took out the drive, backup the files, put it back and tried recover the hard drive with Win 7 CD but no response from the drive. A friend of mine had a same problem on her Sony laptop. I wondered if there is any virus that can disable the C drive or ruin the setting of BIOS.
