R500 memory upgrade problem

#1 Post by kuksx » Mon Dec 26, 2011 11:29 am

Hi,

i bought my thinkpad two years ago with single module 2GB ram and with upgrade kit - additional 2GB which i installed in the free slot.
Recently i decided to upgrade to 2x4GB, got the set matching the specs (DDR3, 1066MHz), but strange thing occured: I can change only the one module. When trying to change the second one (with the default 2GB from manufacturer), computer starts beep 1-3-3-1 - no/bad memory.
So i can run only with 6GB - the original module in the first slot and one 4GB module in second slot. Even if i change the original module with the second 2GB module, computer is not booting ...

Does anybody know what the hell is happening?

thank you, Lukas.

What brand did you buy the modules of? I have many experiences with not working upgrades from Crosshair and other 'cheap' brands. I'm running 2x 4gig's of Crucial ram in my R500.

What happens when you try just one 4GB module in the 1st slot by itself? Then what happens if you have just one module in the second slot by itself? Try every combination of 1 stick by itself and 2 sticks in. If you rule out the possibility that one of the sticks is bad, then it is probably a compatibility problem. Get some Kingston 1333 (it will auto down clock) and be done with it. Memory is dirt cheap to just buy some more.
