Upgrade w520 Display

#1 Post by di3gopa » Mon Feb 06, 2012 5:30 pm

Hello everyone, i just got a w520 thinkpad with the basic HD Display (1366x768) And i was thinking to upgrade it to the FHD display ->

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1080P-LCD-scree ... 854wt_1041

Is this a straight forward upgrade? or do i have to change the display cable or something?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum!

The swap is plug and play. No additional parts or programming are necessary.

I have several brand new genuine Lenovo FHD LCD's for your W520.

Send a PM if you are interested.

Slightly off topic but does anyone know if you can put the multitouch FHD display from the W510 into a W520. I like the idea of having it but wouldn't want to give up the 2x battery life and 2x CPU speed I have in the W520
W520 4276-37U, W520 4282-A61, and X61T 7769-A67 ThinkPads; D20 4155-CTO ThinkStations; plus lots of ThinkCentres

Don't take the hassle to buy from HK.
It is very easy to upgrade the screen.

sorry to ask a question here, but better than making a new thread..

Does swapping the screen break warranty? If yes, you can just swap them back without them noticing? thanks

I have 3 year Onsite

I have not tried a swap.

The standard LCD is not as thick as the touch LCD. The lid as such is slightly deeper say 1/8" to 3/16" to accomodate the thicker LCD. The entire W510 touch LCD lid assembly would fit perfectly on the W520. The connection to the motherboard between the W510 and W520 appears to be identical.

I don't think there would be any noticeable change in battery life.

Hi!
So di3gopa did you go through with this swap? I am thinking about similar thing - I want to change the LCD on my T520 (1366*768) for the FHD one. I even wrote to the same seller as you are posting in the first post. He told me that I need a FHD cable.
But according what Brad says - it is Plug and Play - so the cable in T520 (is it the same as in W520 right?) is the same for all the displays and resolutions?
So I can just buy the FHD LCD, swap it with the HD one, plug it and go? :)

I was also thinking about the touch FHD panel - it would be interesting. It is the resistive technology right? Did anyone tried it yet?

How about the warranty? Is it void when I change the LCD?

Thanks for your experience guys!

I am on the same wagon, the seller said one thing, but as Brad said, it should work, can anyone confirm this?

Thanks!

Has anyone ever clarified the cable issue?

Also, I don't see anyone mentioning the LED control card, when upgrading from HD to FHD (or HD+) on a T520/T530. Is that an issue?

Well I changed the HD LCD in my T520 with the FullHD LCD and it works just fine (used the same cable and everything)
- did this help?

@Dale - thanks. That confirms what Brad, on this forum, is also saying. I don't know if it depends on what screen you're using, but it seems that the FRU: 04W1544 (1920x1080) uses the same cable and control card as the original 1366x768 screen. So, I'm going to assume that's right.

Yep, I think it is as you said.
There was the problem with the touch screen that you cannot use on regular T520, but it is a different story.
