W520 Coollaboratory Liquid for CPU and GPU?
Hello,
Is there anyone who applied a Coollaboratory Liquid Pro/Ultra in W520? If so, how significant was the improvement over stock paste? My GPU (2000M) is throttling in Furmark after like two minutes, even sooner with Prime95 running.
I know this is a known problem (maybe I should go for Dell M4600 instead...but no...I still like the ThinkPad )

Cooler paste makes a difference measured in a few degrees, maybe it's enough, maybe not, I use AS5 my self.
There are tweaks that make a real difference, I have talked about it quite a bit lately.
Disable "CPU Power Management" in the BIOS, if that is not enough, try undervolting the GPU (you have to know about overclocking video cards to do this).
Also aggressive fan control can make a difference, just make the fan run at max speed constantly when playing games.

I found one mention of CLU in W520. This: http://i50.tinypic.com/21l34nq.jpg ...looks like few degrees is enough
CLP ordered...but I'll look into the tweaks anyway.

Re: W520 Coollaboratory Liquid for CPU and GPU?
OK, I have some results...
i7-2820QM
2000M
Ambient: 25°C
Furmark alone:
GPU: 71°C, no throttling (before: way over 70°C with throttling)
Prime95 alone, maximum heat test:
Core #1 (hottest): hovers around 80°C (before: 86°C)
Furmark + Prime95 combined:
GPU: 71-75°C, throttling every few seconds
Core #1: 88°C (before: 92°C)
All with stock fan settings. So let's call it a partial success (And I hope I applied that TIM properly, it was quite PITA...but third time's the charm! ). Nice few degrees anyway.
Can someone chime in with their numbers?

Oh, I found out a terrible mistake I've made.
That Furmark throttling was not caused by the temperature, but by the nVidia drivers. I thought only newer desktop cards are affected, but obviously not.
I installed a Heaven Benchmark instead. And with running Prime95 in the background, GPU went to 87°C but with absolutely no throttling.
Problem solved I guess

Re: W520 Coollaboratory Liquid for CPU and GPU?
I found a problem with a CLU in a laptop I guess
CLU soldifies and creates a weld, which is OK on the desktop, but as the laptop flexes, cooler moves slightly against the dies. The weld would crack in a few weeks/months and temperatures would skyrocket. Ask me how I know that...
So my next try will be a Dow Corning TC-5022, which is more of an industrial grade TIM. Also sold as the Akasa AK-TC 5022.
Will see...
