W500 broken hinge

#1 Post by rpug » Fri May 23, 2014 4:10 pm

Hi all,

The left hinge of my W500 has broken. It looks like the metal piece that would usually go under the screw has flaked away and so now the hinge becomes disconnected.

Here's a picture: http://i.imgur.com/2781tMr.jpg

Anyone know of a reasonably easy fix? or am I looking at needing a new assembly?

Thanks,
Ryan

Maybe super glue or steel epoxy?

Look at the right hinge to get an idea of how the broken part is supposed to look like.

No, do it a proper way! It's a ThinkPad, not some teenager's MSI... :)

Its a common failure.

You need to replace the magnesium frame behind the LCD. The hinges wont do it, since they afe still intact.

Its rather expensive :/

It looked to me like only the hinge is broken, but now I see you're probably right :|

The roll-cage breaking in that corner was super common for us and we had to fix tons of them. I've still got a box of cages. Often times the screw posts on the back cover get ripped off too, I see that the plastic for the front cover broke around the screw, while mostly cosmetic some repeat breaks seemed to happen when we didn't replace the front cover too, since that third screw no longer plays a role in structural integrity if the plastic around it is broken away.

Towards the end of our W500 usages the covers coming from lenovo started to get flimsier, warped, and their screw hole placement became less accurate but I do have some cover kits and should have some hinges as well.

If you are still looking for some W500 parts let me know, I'll check whats left of them when I'm at work. I'll probably set up shop in the forum's marketplace once I dig through the boxes and see what I've got for parts.

I have the exact same problem. Now I'm trying to complain to my original ebay buyer. How much would a new cover and frame cost?

I just looked online for prices and holy crap its nuts that places are selling these for $100+

I'm going to post all of this in the marketplace later on too but for those following this thread here you go:

Here's what I'm thinking my prices will be, I'm not trying to gouge anyone and if these seem unreasonable chime in. I'm not sure what shipping costs are yet, I'll have to dabble with USPS's shipping calculators or go flat rate which is typically $10-$15 depending on the box size. All prices are in USD. These will be unused stock, not in their boxes but still in the foam or plastic sleeves they shipped in.

If you have any questions feel free to PM me.

Rollcage - 43Y9736 - $20
Cover kit (Includes a LCD Rear Cover and LCD Front Cover - 43Y9735 - $30
Rear cover only - $20
Front cover only -$10
I'll try to include the black stickers that cover the screw holes on the front cover (if you know you need them please state that in your PM so I can ensure I do it!!).
If you need to replace a screw or two that fell out and got lost let me know and I'll see what I've still got.

W500 fans - 45N5492 - $20
Optical Drives (sata ultrabay slim) various FRUs - $10
Hinges (specify left or right, keep in mind these don't usually break when the frame does, take a picture if you want help on deciding if it should be replaced) - $5 each

I've got other random bits and pieces like speakers, power connectors, Intel wireless cards, etc so PM me even if it doesn't appear on this list, batteries I absolutely do not have.
