Fix for purplish hue on W520/W510 panel?
Fix for purplish hue on W520/W510 panel?
My W520 panel has a very purplish bias . Same on my W510 and W510 replacement, which I returned.
It is the HD+ (1600x900) panel.
I tried the ICM files from the Lenovo website, but they changed little. I tried calibrating myself (I'm useless at calibrating) and that just screwed-up the contrast & other colors and was worse overall.
Found these two ICM files from qwerty42 that are definite improvements overall and do reduce my purple hue, but far from completely (these were calibrated for an FHD display, not for HD+)
- dispcalGUI ThinkPad Display 1920 2012-04-30 D6500 2.2 HQ XYZLUT.icm
- dispcalGUI ThinkPad Display 1920 2012-04-30 D6500 L HQ 3xCurve+MTX.icm
Does anyone have a good ICM color file for W520/W510 (which I think use the same panel) that they would share or point me at to try please?

Thank you for that ICC file from the 530.
On my W520, it significantly reduces the purplish hue in light areas. But medium blue still renders as purple - for example, the blue letters in my signature below and in "thinkpads.com" at top of the page all look purple. And the background color of forum posts are light grey instead of light blue. But maybe firefox is not working correctly with it, as I've read here:

Any other ICM or ICC color profiles I could try? Anyone?

The color profiles have a good effect, but they don't persist. After a reboot, the screen reverts to its initial color. So I have to reselect the profile - even though it still shows as already being the current default:
Control Panel -> Color Mgmt -> Advanced -> Change System Defaults -> Set as Default Profile
(selected profile shows as default)
Why does the profile only take effect temporarily? Is this the wrong place to set it up, or am I missing something?

That's because they are purple.SkiBunny wrote:On my W520, it significantly reduces the purplish hue in light areas. But medium blue still renders as purple - for example, the blue letters in my signature below and in "thinkpads.com" at top of the page all look purple.

If you don't like the color purple or grey, then you shouldn't have bought a high gamut display that shows colors correctly.
As for the color profile disappearing, you will need to disable the Intel driver upon boot, otherwise it will override the color profile settings.

That possibility had crossed my mind. I also checked with someone else that I'm not colour blind.Aurora wrote:That's because they are purple.
Thing is, I expected "Thinkpads" to use royal blue letters like the IBM logo colour, not purple.
I'll be interested to check it on my older thinkpad IPS screens and Samsung UN60D8000 tv (tomorrow).
Do you know, please, which driver is it that I should disable?Aurora wrote: As for the color profile disappearing, you will need to disable the Intel driver upon boot, otherwise it will override the color profile settings.

They probably used a bad monitor and thought it was blue. Trust me, it is purple, I have high gamut monitors as well and can confirm.SkiBunny wrote:That possibility had crossed my mind. I also checked with someone else that I'm not colour blind.

To disable the driver, open msconfig, go to startup and untick anything that is called Intel.

Re: Fix for purplish hue on W520/W510 panel?
My W520 lappy screen is now much improved and less eye straining. It is similar to the difference between a calibrated and uncalibrated HDTV. Thank you Aurora for your helpful replies.

Maybe I'm dumb but that text in a signature really looks blue to me. It is a #0000FF hex color. Blue and blue only
And those blue letters in the logo are also blue And I guess Photoshop doesn't lie...
///The darker background of the forum posts is #DCE1E5 (R:220 G:225 B:229). Just a slight difference but it makes a grey with a slight blue tint.

High gamut screens often render all kinds of colors the wrong way.Aurora wrote:They probably used a bad monitor and thought it was blue. As a Dell U3014 owner I get that too. The only usable mode on that screen is game-mode; in all others it has too much inputlag. But in game-mode, it only runs in wide gamut, rendering all kinds of colors the wrong way, especially yellows.
I have a colorimeter on order though, so hopefully I'll soon be rid of the stupid calibration problems once and for all.

You can't use high gamut monitors without a calibration. You have to tame the sheer amount of colors. A colorimeter is a must.

I have an HD+ display on my w520 so this should be more accurate than the FHD calibrations.

I actually remembered that this existed because my colorimeter can't seem to be detected and I couldn't make an icm.

Not a hint of red (or purple) in its color.

Human vision auto-adjusts it's color balance all the time. If you are in a normally-lit environment, and close one eye for 2 minutes, then open it again, you will see everything very green / blue. The reds are hugely dimmed. That's because with your eye-lid closed in an otherwise light environment you only see red.
