W701 with 16G*4.... any ideas?

#1 Post by RMSMajestic » Wed Jan 21, 2015 11:51 pm

Well I know what you are thinking when you first see the topic.
And yes, I've found 16GB DDR3 sticks on feebay
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Corsair-Vengean ... 708wt_1362
there were 3 remaining when I saw the listing. Well, I wish I saw it a bit ealier so that I can grab the other one. I don't mind sleeping on the street of New York for the rest of this month cos the 16GB laptop sticks are so so so so so rare...... I've never seen any of those before, even pictures

The item itself seems rather suspicious though, I searched the serial number on corsair website and it turns out to be 2*8G kit. But I've decided to trust the seller and ebay this time, as according to seller's description it's highly likely that those are actually 16Gb sticks. It's worth risking the returning postage for ultra rare RAMs.

While I'm waiting for the RAM and my W701 to arrive, I'd like to know if any one here ever had chance to try 16GB sticks on W701, or have seen any of the 16GB laptop sticks before. Or if anyone has tried 16GB sticks on a Nehalem based system?

I remember seeing a Nehalem based system with 144GB RAM..... So hopefully (only hopefully) I can make my W701 a 56GB behemoth

You may be in for a nasty surprise (and hopefully a refund).
On Dell's webpage http://www.dell.com/us/dfh/p/alienware-m18x-r2/pd, you'll find:

The technology you want.
Enjoy the flexibility of up to three hard drives, SSD configurations, caching and RAID options for incredible speed.
If you click on Find Out More › they state:
The Alienware M18x laptop can house up to an incredible 32GB1 of DDR3 RAM and support for up to XMP DDR3 memory options up to 1866MHz, providing the speed you need to achieve victory. M18x can be configured with up to 3 hard drives, including mSATA for caching or optional SSDs for greater speed. On top of all that, RAID options deliver high speeds and data security to put you on the fast track to victory.

Well I suspected the seller mistaken virtual memory as physical memory... but based on the $800 price he provided it's unlikely that those are 8GB cos the price for 8GBs never gone up to 200USD. DELL's official website provide merely a reference, just like lenovo website. i7 3960x can take 16GB DIMMs so there's no reason why any other SNB can't.

So, I'll wait and see :D I'm quite optimistic on that cos I just risk the return postage

OK so sort of unsurprisingly what I received was 8GB sticks..... :/
Guess we should just forget about the legendary 16GB sticks. They are just like unicorns......

I wonder if a bios mod could theoretically help..

No. Unfortunately not.
HOPE@51nb has tested 16GB DDR3 on all his thinkpads, and only the ones which have Broadwell CPU beginning with i5-5xxx or i7-5xxx can take 16GB DIMMs
So I guess 32GB is the maximum for Nehalem, SNB, IVB and Hotwell.
