Best possible upgrades for w701?

#1 Post by jedisurfer1 » Wed Mar 18, 2015 10:45 pm

I'm missing the old school 1920x1200 and have a x701 to play with. I bought 1200p screen, a 920xm, it already has RAID and the fx 2800 (if anyone knows a sure fire way to get a better gpu without risking the laptop I'm interested), I have 32gb of ram and a few spare SSD.

Is there anything else I can upgrade or you can recommend?

That's pretty much it..... Maybe you can modify the cooling system a bit so that you can overclock the i7 920xm to something like 3.6Ghz (without throttling).

If ever there will be a way of upgrading the graphics card, then one should definitely go for it..... But now W701 and its parts are still too expensive for experiments of any kind. :/

In theory you should be able to use a 3800M. According to the wiki that was an option on the W701. Those seem to run $90-$220 on ebay right now.
If you're more ambitious you could possibly buy a Precision M6500 or EliteBook 8740w with a 3800M and swap it out and resell the laptop.

EDIT: actually it sounds like Lenovo does some tricks with the video BIOS that may prevent 3rd party cards from working.
