Telemetry (spying) now introduced in W7 and W8.x through WU

#1 Post by ajkula66 » Sun Aug 23, 2015 5:33 pm

If you've chosen to stay away from W10 because of privacy concerns, you may want to be careful with Windows Updates these days, specifically one marked KB3075249

From Microsoft themselves:
This update introduces the Diagnostics and Telemetry tracking service to existing devices. By applying this service, you can add benefits from the latest version of Windows to systems that have not yet upgraded.

I have finally been able to rid all of my systems from this crap.

Now I examine each and every update number before downloading them.

Microsoft needs to give up on the intrusive behavior. The more computer savy among us are not going to allow it to happen. Maybe we're not their targets?

Do you use any Google software (Chrome browser etc) or an Android device ? If so, the Windows telemetry is non-issue for you :D

Not an apples to apples comparison. Telemetry is integrated in the OS at a much more fundamental level than Google's server based services. You can choose to not use them, you don't have that choice with OS code. Blocking Google with a hosts file or other DNS based blocking method is fairly easy if you don't like Google.

The telemetry service can be disabled in the services control applet in all versions of Windows, even 10. It does stay disabled on reboot unlike Windows Update.
I've got a T580, 2 W500s, a W520, an X201T, an X220T, an 3 X61Ts, a 15" T60, a 14" T60P, a 15" UXGA T60P, a 15" T42p a W701, and my first Thinkpad, a 770X.

Not quite, there are different levels of telemetry (you can review them in for instance, shutup10), and the 3rd level will randomly re-enable itself. Also, there are telemetry services that are triggered to run in task scheduler, you will need to disable those tasks. Simply configuring a basic slider in the metro UI is *not* enough.

I was referring to the Diagnostic Telemetry service which was renamed "Connected User Experiences" in Windows 10. If the service is disabled, it will stay disabled, at least so far. That might change and the twice yearly upgrades tend to reset a lot of settings. If the Windows update or BITS services are disabled, they will be reenabled on the next reboot. They can be disabled by messing with the file permissions on the associated dlls and denying execution of them to all users. The services applet won't disable them.

I generally clear almost all scheduled tasks. It's just a good policy and saves a lot of wasted CPU cycles.
