If you can get a hold of the image files, you can roll it yourself as far as the theme goes. As for the logon screen, if you get a hold of the image you can use the following utility to change the logon bg: http://download.cnet.com/Tweaks-com-Log ... 11825.html
Thinkpad T61p 6458-5KU Win7x64 Ultimate * It's Dead Jim! :( *
HP Mini 210-1150NR Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal
Former:
Thinkpad T43p
Thinkpad T30

How does one change the welcome screen to the Think version from stock W7 version?

Try loginstudio by stardock. It's a free program.

I actually hate third party programs from unknown or obscure software companies. Is there any way to do this manually?

Stardock is neither unknown nor of poor reputation. They have been around for many, many years and I have used and purchased many of their products.
New:

  • create dword " OEMBackground" in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI\Background
  • copy backgroundDefault.jpg to C:\windows\system32\oobe\info\backgrounds
While backgroundDefault.jpg is the image of your choice. It's maximum size is 256kb, the name of the image can't be changed. if you want to, you can create several background-images for various resolutions. This is, how C:\windows\system32\oobe\info\backgrounds should look like:

Code: Select all

background768x1280.jpg
background900x1440.jpg
background960x1280.jpg
background1024x1280.jpg
background1280x1024.jpg
background1024x768.jpg
background1280x960.jpg
background1600x1200.jpg
background1440x900.jpg
background1920x1200.jpg
background1280x768.jpg
background1360x768.jpg

thanks i'd rather do the reg edit you provided than use some spyware/ad driven program like the stardock gimmick.
