An interesting article here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-17710598

For those that love the sound and sight of a Spitfire. 8)

Wouldn't it be great to find those crates and get the Spitfires in the air!
Old aircraft are fascinating.
During my stint at the Institute for Automotive Engineering in Holland, we got an engine from a plane that was shot down over Denmark during WWII.
Turned out to be a 9-cylinder BMW 132 Radial Engine from a German Junkers Ju 52.
That engine had been buried in the mud for 30-40 years.
We worked on it for over a year, but in the end, after a lot of blood, sweat and tears, we got it up and running again, with an enormous racket!
Imagine the fun of synchronizing 9 carburetors...
See here for details of that engine: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_132

As impressive as the sound of Spitfire is even today, the only real environment for it is a surround sound environment created by combining ME-109, Ju-87 and Hurricanes in the background...

I wonder if there are any ME109s or JU87s still around? Hopefully someone will know. There is one airworthy Hurricane to my knowledge because I have seen it ... it is part of the Battle of Britain flight team. What a sight! It should be in the air again this coming June for our Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations. 8)

Or, in the 1950’s and 1960’s, sitting on Belle Isle watching and listening to the Gold Cup races when all the unlimited hydros were powered by WW II vintage Rolls-Royce Merlin and Allison engines

I was just reading about a fully restored FW here in the U.S. Took a couple of decades to get it right, but the darn warbird flies.

There were several preserved and fully functional ME109s in former Yugoslavia before the war of 1991. Don't know what their fate was after that...I'm pretty sure that none of them was used in it...

There's a bunch of people who are heavily into restoring this type of stuff worldwide...so my guess is that the answer to your question would be "yes"....
