Re: Two Lancasters
That's cool. Great to see that these planes are not only restored and painted, but also able to fly. And one even flew across the sea from Canada.. Wow. I have a hard time keeping the big english WWII bombers apart, Halifax, Lancaster etc, but I recognized the Lancaster this time. Funny story: A Wellington airplane was shot down over my elementary school in April 1940. The school was built back up, and when I went there, a propeller blade from the Wellington plane was hanging in the hallway. We spent many hours looking at and touching that piece of history.
I used to be, and to some extent still is, a WWII airplane enthusiast. So one of my biggest moment so far is when I got a private guided tour inside a Heinkel 111 bomber, and even sit in the cockpit and look out through the big glass nose. It was restored, but sadly it wasn't able to start or fly. Which I am glad to see these Lancasters are.

Re: Two Lancasters
Yes, that IS music. Both the Merlin and its German equvalent, the DB 601/605. Amazing to see the DB engine's features like fuel injection and barometrically controlled supercharger. Wartimes certainly pushed development to the limit.
Not to mention that the Germans even put such an engine in a car.. I found this article not too long ago: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_T80 Before boost pressure and rpm could be taken to the levels it is today, the only way to get 3000 horsepower in your car was to fit a 44 liter V12 engine..

@killer:
Back in 1979 when I first landed in the UK I was taken to a huge airplane museum of some kind, but for the life of me I can't remember where it was. They had quite an extensive outdoor display of various WW I and WWII airplanes...
Do you have any idea of what I'm referring to - apologies for being vague - whether it still exists, and its actual location?

Could be the RAF Museum http://www.rafmuseum.org.uk/london/ or Imperial War Museum at Duxford http://www.iwm.org.uk/visits/iwm-duxford
There's also Brooklands (where the pre-war racing circuit used to be) http://www.brooklandsmuseum.com/ or the Shuttleworth Collection near Bedford http://www.shuttleworth.org/index.asp
I hope that helps.

Re: Two Lancasters
What incident took place then? Just curious. Always sad when equipment that has been preserved that long gets ruined by modern civilization's actions. I would have loved to see a "Sturzkampfflugzeug". Such a crazy operation. 360mph diving and pull back up, a maneuver that exposed pilots to 5G..ajkula66 wrote:Was inside Hurricane, Spitfire, ME-109 and Stuka...doubt that any of these treasures survived the spring of '99 though...
And killer: thanks for some good links to must-visit sites when we go to the UK for a vacation.

Norway Pad, the Brooklands museum has a Wellington bomber that was fished out of a loch in Scotland. It is gradually being restored. With your tale about a Wellington propeller blade you might like to see what the whole thing looks like.

Great, would love to see it! With its proximity to London, Brooklands would be a good choice combined with a trip to London.

Re: Two Lancasters
I was in the Air Cadets and I remember being in the Battle of Britain Parade several times - We were always facing away from the runway, however for the flyby everyone would turn and watch (even though we were told not to) - The last one I was in there was the Lancaster, a Spitfire, and I believe a Corsair in the flyby (this was a few years ago), it really is a spectacular sight.

No miniatures Temetka? I have a few of them, from Ares' WW2 Wings of Glory line and Wings of War WW2 line. These ones:
Supermarine Spitfire Mk.I
Grumman FM-1 Wildcat
Messerschmitt Bf 109 E-3
Mitsubishi A6M2 Reisen
Supermarine Spitfire Mk.II
Messerschmitt BF109 E-4
Junkers Ju.87B-2 Stuka
Curtiss P-40F Warhawk
Kawasaki Ki-61-I-KAIc Hien
Reggiane Re.2001 Falco II
Yakovlev Yak-1
Curtiss P-40 Warhawk
..and a few more on the must buy list (like FW-190, P-51D, Bf110, Beaufighter, He111, B-25 and so on..).
I do consider the WW2 period as the most beautiful age of the aviation. Beautiful planes, brave men, little electronics.

Re: Two Lancasters
Sadly, I don't have any models. However if I were to get one it would be of a plane that has held my imagination ever since I was a wee aviation fan.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Messerschmitt_Me_262
Such a cool looking plane and very advanced for it's day. Had it been produced in large numbers it could have changed the skies over Europe in terms of tactical air superiority. I don't know if it would have had much impact on ground war though.
Also this has nothing to with the topic at hand, but since I brought up things that have captured my imagination let me introduce you folks to the Bomarc missile. I loved based on looks alone. I mean how could a missile that looks this insanely awesome not be cool?

Re: Two Lancasters
WWII planes was my big interest also as a kid, so I bought many model kits. Fortunately my dad helped me building the first ones, so they got built and painted to such a decent state that I have kept most of them. My favorite is the Heinkel 111, mostly beacuse one of them was shot down by a british Skua in the mountains close to where I live. The Skua also had to make an emergency landing nearby, and the crew from the Skua later met the crew from the Heinkel in a cabin up in the mountains. These events were the basis for the 2012 movie "Into the White". The Heinkel wreck was rescued in the 70s, and later restored. I had the honor of a guided tour inside it, which was one of my bigger moments.

Re: Two Lancasters
Dear George,
If I had come to the UK for the first time in 1979 I think I would have remembered roughly where it was. I remember where I landed the time I flew for the first time (Athens 1973), the first time I flew to Canada (Edmonton 1975), and the first time I flew to the USA (New York 1977). BTW, I hate flying and prefer to travel by sea. It is much safer, the food is better, and you can smoke on deck.
If you flew from the former Yugoslavia to England in 1979 it is unlikely that you arrived near Coventry. It is more likely that you arrived near London at either Gatwick or Heathrow.
Therefore Hendon seems the most likely ... it isn't far from Heathrow.
I hope this helps.
Wishing you all the best.

Re: Two Lancasters
My dear friend with a scary name... ...
It's the 80s where I lost most of my memory but can tell you this much:
My '79 visit to UK was spent mostly in Brighton, in what was then known as "East Sussex School Of English"...we landed at Luton, I believe.
To the "aircraft place" I got taken by some friends of the family that I'm no longer in contact with. At that time they lived in the Lancaster area, but I'm fairly certain that it's not where the site was located.
So Coventry sounds about right, for some reason...

I agree. Hendon has the best collection. Duxford is good too. It is just outside Cambridge so if the aircraft museum isn't up to scratch at least you can visit Kings College Chapel, the Round Church, and the 'backs'.

I myself am an aviation nut, especially WWII and pre-war.
ajkula66, have you ever made it to the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum's WWII Weekend? The only thing better than watching a B-29 start its engines and fly around was listening to the speakers' talks.
