It's windows XP Pro.

I was expecting the usual windows detection, but it didn't show up.

As pkiff said, there really is no such thing as a driver for a plain DVD drive. You know your adapter is good, and that is not likely to fail in any case. I conclude the drive is bad.

I hate eBay returns, too. But on the bright side, this seller's description implies ey is communicative. Maybe this instance will not be so bad, since this seller has more of the same model in stock.

I hate returns, I just got done with one and it took forever.

I was just going to eat the cost and not even bother.

There's good news though, the seller offered me a full refund without having to return the item.

So I hope I get that.

I'm just going to tell my uncle to get an external one, they're dirt cheap anyways.

Got the return, seller is stand up. She did lie about not having more in stock, but I woudln't want to bother with another one anyways.

So I took another chance and bought another used drive(Sony CRX830E):

This one was packaged extremely well.

The caddy swapped right over, and windows recognized it immediately.
No drivers no nothing, just plug and play!

I am having trouble playing a DVD. Windows media player gives me a "try lowering the resolution or color."
I tried both and still nothing.

I installed VLC player, but it just crashes.

unfortunately this laptop doesn't have an Ethernet port, so I can hook it up to my internet.

I think all it needs is an update, or an updated WMP.

Thanks again guys, couldn't have done it without you!

Installed "K-Lite Codec Pack Standard 7.9.0" and changed the settings to 16bit. (in 24 the colors messed up)

And now it's playing DVDs beautifully in Windows Media Player :)
