Identifying my ThinkPad

#1 Post by MaryK » Fri Feb 21, 2014 3:51 pm

Hello!

I'm new here today, please forgive me if I'm not in the right place to post this, but I couldn't find anywhere else that fits. :) Last night a ThinkPad 560 2640-EOA gem was given to me. It's a beauty! No wear at all, bright, clean and beautiful! The usual errors came up 161 and 163 - those are easy to fix. I'm wanting to upgrade it to its fullest extent. The trouble I'm having is identifying just what 560 I have. On the Lenovo site, and other places I've come across, mention the 560x and the 560z. No 560 without any letter attached. My question is: Does the x stand for all models other than z? Or is it a specific model? I want to download drivers and such, but I'm not sure what to do with the number. It may be a silly question to ask, but I really don't know. Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Mary :)

No. 560X and 560Z are entirely different models.

Thank you so much! I'm glad to be here! :-) I had a feeling there was something else I should know. It feels like Christmas; this is a lovely little one. I'm gonna have fun with it.

Also FYI: There's the 560, 560E, 560X and 560Z. All are slightly different from each other due to CPU, graphic controllers and chipsets changes. If you would like to know the details, download a copy of the Personal Systems Reference (PSREF) list of that era from here:

http://www.lenovo.com/psref/pdf/twbook.pdf (IBM ThinkPad; 1992 to 2001 (withdrawn models) (1.13MB))

You can also download a copy of the Hardware Maintenance Manual for the 560 from here:

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloa ... FAN-3TJKLN

It's very helpful when "getting into" your shiny toy and putting it back together again :) .
