ThnikPad 770z - Windows 98 - can't scale to 1024x768
Hello
A bit of a newbie to these wonderful old machines and Windows actually, so please bare with me.
I have a 770z that I did a clean install of Win 98 on. The install went perfectly well but I am stuck on 16 colors 640x480, so the video portion is cropped to the center of the display.
Can I change this through the Advanced Display Properties or do I need to install a specific video card driver?
I ran the video tests from BIOS, which pass with OK, and the video hardware test shows that 1024x768 @ 24 bit is supported.
Any help would be most appreciated.
Additional Info:
My particular model has the following related specs as per entering BIOS with F1.
SystemBoard
Model/Submodel/Revision FC/01/00
Power management version 1.04
POST/BIOS v. 1.08
Video v. 1.27
Setup v. 1.05
Slave controller v 1.07
Display is setup for single
All BIOS tests including advanced all pass, including formatting the HD through BIOS. The machine reports all OK.
BIOS version, Date IOET23WW, 09/10/99
Microprocessor Pentium(**) II Processor 366 MHz
Also installed a new coin cell battery for BIOS.

Sure looks like you are missing a graphics driver, and maybe others. Just click the "drivers" link at the top of the forum page, and search for drivers for your 770Z.
Collection = T430 - T500 - R400 - X300 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - R61 (15" SXGA+) - T60 - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P

Hello Neil (Senior thinkpader)
Thank you so much for the heads up. What a great resource.
I will burn them to CD and then install, would that work. I also have a USB stick, can I just load them up on the stick? I will try the latter because I'm not sure if I have blank CDs on hand. I'll chime back with success or failure.
Much obliged by the link, what a terrific resource!

The basic installation of Windows 98 probably won't have drivers for many USB flash disks. I remember using an unofficial USB update. http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/kb/usbmsd98.php

As far as I recall W98 SE supported usb1 natively.
However it used to need extra drivers to support many usb keys so this may hamper your efforts to find a usb stick/key that will work.
You will have to find a way of copying the video drivers onto the hard disk another way like from a network, a CD, connecting the HDD into another pc, maybe even floppies if the drivers are not too big.
So there are plenty of challenges there for you.
