ThinkPad 770 recovery CD's?

#1 Post by sean770 » Sun Nov 01, 2015 12:08 pm

I saw a few recovery CD images posted on this website a few days ago. I did some searching on the forum and couldn't find either links to the 770's original recovery CD images OR a place that sells said disks. Could anyone point me in the right direction?

Mine is the 233MMX Pentium 1 that came with windows 95 BTW.

I have a sealed Product Recovery CD-Rom for a ThinkPad 770, IBM part number 10L8542. Also have a floppy disc: Patch for ACP modem equipped ThinkPad 770 and 600 machines. This patch is intended to fix the following problem: Blue screen fatal exceptions with large amounts of RAM installed. Send me a private message to arrange shipment of these items.

the recovery CD images were for T43 and 755CD/701C..
i pulled them when i was running out of disk storage space on the server..
a week of flailing and $50/month yielded an additional 500 gigs of rotating storage and a more healthy forum..

note that there are the 770 1AU (US model, other geographic areas might differ in the "U" portion of model #), 770#, 770X and 770Z models.. the 770Z supported hot swapping of HDD's in the ultrabay..
all this from increasingly unreliable memory.. :)

i have a LOT of 770 series stuff.. might have a dock as well..
some of this was a gift from Birger Petterson (B. 1920's, d. 2007) a good friend of myself and the forum..
i can look and see what i have if you wish, but the hardware, a bunch of 770 series thinkpads, a keyboard bezel (NOS) and more is all in the down stairs part of the house..

i DO have 770 series recovery CD's AND the very rare video applications AND the video board that plugged in under the right side of the 770 series..

Let me know when you look through the stuff. I got a sweet brand new Selectadock III from ebay for $22.00 shipped! I thought I had got the docking station from Amazon but the seller had messed up the inventory and cancelled my order.

I'm going to put a 1996 3D accelerator card into the docking station and use this thing as a Windows 95 (1997 and older) nostalgic gaming machine.

The original hard drive in my laptop with windows 98 is on it's last legs. I ordered a 16GB PATA SSD from ebay for $35.00, I want to do a fresh factory windows 95 install on it and figured the original CD's would be the easiest way to get the thing running like new as a starting point.

I'll make a fun build thread about it after I get all of my stuff together.

EDIT: My exact model is 9548-30U

I just got a 9549-7AU

I'm hoping to locate the 770X Win98 Recovery CD-ROM (with boot diskette) and Customization CD-ROM (apps/drivers).

Also the media for the DVD and Enhanced Video Adapter.

I think there are four software components that relate to the DVD and Enhanced Video Adapter (DEVA): two drivers and two pieces of software.

The video capture features require a "video capture" driver as well as the Asymetrix Video Producer software that Bill mentions above. I never used this software, and don't know how it works or how difficult/easy it is to get it working.

The DVD features require an "MPEG" features driver as well as specific software for playing DVDs. If you are using Windows 98/98SE, then you'll want a copy of Mediamatics DVDExpress. Only that specific DVD player contains the proper coding to take advantage of the MPEG hardware acceleration chips on the DEVA. There were rumours that certain versions of Windows Media Player could also be used, but I never confirmed this.

The two drivers are still available from Lenovo's Legacy driver support site (or by using the "Drivers" link available to logged in members in the top menu of the Thinkpads Forum). Select the 770X, and look under "Multimedia" to find the drivers.

If you message me, I can give you a link to download an ISO of the Mediamatics DVDExpress CD. You only need the disc to install DVDExpress so that you can then run the update to DVDExpress. The update process is a full new installation but it checks for a prior install before letting you install it. You can get the update from the same Drivers link under "CD and DVD drives". Though, I think I would instead use the DVDExpress upgrade found in the 600X series files (look under "Software and Utility"), which provides a later and slightly less buggy version of DVDExpress which I think is still compatible with the DEVA.

Perhaps I should make a new thread..... The 128MB RAM on the main board is bad, but the 64MB and other 128MB DIMM are good.

I just hope dropping it off a 6 story building will give me access to replace it.....

I used Asymetrix Video Producer, Compel, and MediaBlitzl for win31 a little after video for windows came out, so that was ... 1995?

dropping a 770 off a 6 story building will for SURE scratch it and maybe break the display but it will probably still work.. :)

the army was using the 770 series in the kuwait war and thought highly of how they are "built like a tank"..
an abrams tank that the russian tank used by saddams army..

I had an Aptiva Win98 recovery CD and funny enough it restored to the 770X. I then relived things I had forgotten about in 95/98 like rebooting every time a new bit of hardware was found. It was like 6 or 8 hours (I stepped away at one point).

I couldn't get it to find a driver for an old 256MB USB drive (or a 1GB), so after everything else was working I started applying SP and such from Microsoft. Success (short lived)!

I now see any USB drive, however my ACPI battery is no longer recognized correctly and everything says I'm on AC (when I'm not), also the DVD drive is gone from the profile.

On another note, the Mediamatics DVDExpress software was on the software selections for the Aptiva as well.
Edit - The Mediamatics DVDExpress software from the Aptiva CD is version 5.x and while for Win98, I have not had it work yet for any movie DVD with OEM Win98SE install. I also note that the other 4 billion posts on the 770 may contain info that I have yet to read.
I did get the Win2K restore CD's for the 600X and was very happy to see they worked on the 770X - except the DVD (no IBM theme for Win98 or 2000?). I had to go back to Win98 though due to needing floppy disks created using rawrite3.
