x1 carbon SATA (not SSD) drive format?

#1 Post by Phidelio » Mon Apr 07, 2014 3:03 pm

Hi guys!

I have been trying to find an answer without luck. I am getting an x1 carbon/i5/320gb tomorrow and I am wondering about the chances upgrading the hard drive. I understand the SSDs are totally proprietory but what about the mechanical sata ones? Are they normal 2.5" drives or what format? Cheers!

I'm not aware of any X1Cs with 320GB hard drives. Are you sure it's a carbon?

X1 carbon's all have SFF SSD's. The largest capacity is 256Gb.

The latest tabook.pdf (v. 453, May 2014) lists one model (20A7006VUS) with a 512 Gb drive.

Most X1 carbons were sold with SSD, but a few had a conventional hd.

The one X1 Carbon that is listed as having a 512 Gb drive in tabook.pdf has an SSD:

I'm not aware of any X1 Carbon having conventional drives. Maybe you're talking about the non-Carbon X1?

I definitely remember there being X1 carbons with a nonSSD hard drive. And, yes, I do know the difference between an X1 and and X1 carbon.

that is not possible. There is no space for either 1.8 or 2.5 inch hdd, nor is there a regular SATA slot. The only X1 that had normal hdd option was the Thinkpad X1. I have the X1, X1 Carbon Gen 1, and Gen 2

There's no space for either a 1.8 or 2.5 inch SSD either. Obviously it wasn't a standard hard drive. I can remember buying an X1 and checking first with the owner that it had an SSD. He responded that all X1 carbons had SSDs, but I was able to convince him that that was not so. Unfortunately, I no longer have the email.
Edit: my recollection is that the 120GB drives are not SSD and the 128GB drives are.

There is no X1 Carbon that has a regular hdd. The 128 gigs model is the Toshiba SSD model, and the the 120 gigs is the intel SSD model. I don't know where you are getting information that x1 Carbon has the regular platter hdd model.

This is the type of SSD used in the X1 Carbon.

Thanks for the photo! The card on the left says 128 GB Sandisk. Is the card on the right part of the same kit?!

Sandisk is the X1 Carbon SSD, and the other one is the mSATA I put in my ThinkPad Edge E320.

I have a 1st Gen X1 Carbon Touch (Type 3448) with the 256 GB SSD. Is there ANY option to upgrade to 512 or did I get in a dead end upgrade-wise? I tried a Crucial M550 M.2 2280 512 GB drive but the connector was different. Did I get stuck with a max of 256?

That X1 has the SFF (Small Form Factor) proprietary interface, instead of the more universal MiniPCI-E (mSATA) or the newer M.2 interface. Consequently, 256GB may be it ...

I have a transcend 512GB M.2 SSD in my new from the outlet store X1 carbon gen 2..
been struggling to get Ubuntu on it as well as win8..

no hard drive or any other external accessible drive or memory or flash or anything..

I must admit I like the X1 carbon but I am no fan of this jiggered keyboard..

Good news: there's an adapter for the first generation of the X1 Carbon available to use an M.2 SSD:

Thanks! Now to find a 512 GB M.2 drive in that form factor. 30mm or 42mm

Unfortunately, as far as I know, there are only M.2 drives with a maximum of 256GB available in 42mm. However, in the future, there may be larger 42mm SSDs.

It's been a few months...

And I bought a 500GB SSD for my X1C1 that of course won't fit because I didn't even consider that there might be other form factors. Shame on me.

Anyway, has anyone had luck upsizing their X1C1 SSD?
Which form factor and/or adapter did you use?

My 256GB is making life difficult and I'm ready to buy... but what?

No luck so far for me. I've had to resort to a 256 GB SD card to boost my storage.

Looks more like a 500GB 2.5" HDD - you can't use 2.5" drives in an X1 Carbon...
