replace carbon x1 gen2 motherboard

#1 Post by jeremyrutman » Tue Nov 24, 2015 4:50 pm

I'd like to replace my carbon x1 gen2 motherboard , will only the gen2 motherboard do, or can other generations (apparently now up to gen 4 is out) mobos also be used in the gen 2?

I have a parts X1 Carbon 2 with HD+ display.
I put in an X1C3 motherboard which did physically fit but one cable was not compatible.
I can't determine if its the LCD or inverter cable, but the X1C3 uses a wider cable, whereas the X1C2 uses a smaller one.
Both laptops are nontouch machines.

I didn't turn it on as I didn't want to risk burning up my motherboard.

Link to imgur, big photo.
X1C3 motherboard is on the bottom, as you can see the X1C2 has a smaller port for the cable that LCD connects to.

edit: My X1C3 is an IPS WQHD model, maybe it requires a different cable and motherboard than the X1C2? I doubt it though.

Most cables for Gen2 and Gen3 are the same (colored green)
Gen2:
00HM151 N LCD cable WQHD
00HM152 N LCD cable Touch

00HM153 N LED cable Touch
04X5596 N LCD cable
04X5597 N LED cable
04X5598 N Touch cable
04X6435 1 Ethernet extension cable

Gen3:
00HM151 N eDP,Non-Touch,WQHD
00HM152 N eDP,Touch,WQHD

00HT408 N LED CBL,FHD/WQHD
00HT409 N LED CBL Touch
04X5596 N eDP,Non-Touch,HD+
04X5598 N Touch cable
04X6435 N Ethernet extension cable

My guess is that the Gen2 uses the (red) 04X5597 and that the Gen3 will need the (red) 00HT408 LED cable to work.

I have a similar issue now - I got a parts motherboard (FRU 00HT355) from a Gen2 machine in hopes of replacing my toasted one (in a type 20a7-0037US machine).
The replacement is listed here as 'Planar i7-5500U 8gb, WIN, N-AMT, Y-TPM ' (if someone knows these codes pls enlighten). The screen cable from my machine however is smaller than
the_connector ( https://imgur.com/yIHL83G ) on the replacement mobo (and way smaller than the gen3 and gen2 connectors previously imgur'ed in this thread) - can it be that my screen is touch while the replacement mobo doesn't support touch? Although the cable from my screen is smaller than the potential replacement mobo connector, it does seem to be more densely packed.

Are there some touch gen2's and some non-touch?

As far as I know after the gen 1 X1 carbon which used different motherboards for touch and non-touch the gen 2 motherboards are the same for touch and non-touch as there is a small connector near the fan that is used for the touch digitizer. This connector would not be used for a non-touch LCD.
