x1c 4th 20fb nvme upgrade

#1 Post by k0NRaD » Sun Mar 14, 2021 12:35 pm

I'm planning to upgrade to a bigger faster ssd drive. the modem supports nvme but I am concerned about temperature after I red some previous topics. There are a lot of 1tb nvme ssds on amazon that come cheap but don't know if brand/model matters. any advice would be appreciated, especially if you have already done it. what did you get? thanks

Greetings!

1. We have the X1C4 (X1 Carbon Gen 4) 20FB-CTO1WW that came preconfigured with the Samsung PM961 PCIe NVMe "2280" SSD of 1 TB.
We heard that this PM961 was the OEM version of the Samsung Evo Plus 960.

The X1C4 accepts only "single sided" SSD.
Anyways, most modern SSD nowadays is "single sided" SSD, and uses the M-Key SSD interface (ie: NVMe with 4x PCIe lanes which is both newer and faster).

fyi, Our older "double sided" ACHI SSD from our X1 Carbon Gen 3 cannot physically fit into our X1 Carbon Gen 4.
(As an aside, X1 Carbon Gen 3 cannot use NVMe SSD as it does not recognize this; we could not perform product recovery on our NVMe SSD onto our X1 Carbon Gen 3).

2. We also did successful product recovery on our X1C4 using Samsung 970 Evo Plus 2 TB.
(You can also put your Samsung 970 Evo Plus SSD into external SSD enclosure, install Samsung Magician, and use its migration wizard for a seamless transfer of your OS onto your external SSD, then swap external SSD back into your X1C4, voila, SSD migrated seamlessly!).
Strongly suggest you do data backup first, perhaps multiple copies of data backup.

3. The above was just a test product recovery; our daily X1C4 SSD is still the OEM Samsung PM961, as our 5-year warranty is still in force.
(We ended up using our Samsung 970 Evo Plus 2 TB on our X1 Extreme instead.)

I purchased a 1tb Samsung 970 eve plus, but after I have read another post of yours about it running hot I am a bit worried. Should I use it or not?

Should be OK, I would not worry it!
It's quite normal for your SSD giving off heat!

In fact, our own OEM SSD [PM961] that came with our X1C4 was quite hot immediately after product recovery too.
Our X1C4 never died on us (and we have 5-year warranty for peace of mind). :)

Modern computers (including X1C4 the X1 Carbon Gen 4) do dissipate heat from the internals, and do factor in the SSD gives off heat as well...

In short, no worries!

(Do have fun with your shiny new SSD !!)
