X1 Carbon Gen 6 WQHD upgrade success

#1 Post by plympton » Wed Jan 03, 2024 2:28 pm

I've been eyeing a new ThinkPad for a while now that they're 16x10, and even tried an Intel Carbon Gen 10 w/ OLED - and returned it (hated the screen & battery life).

I've had several Carbon gen 6 - even one on the shelf as a full spare. Even today, 5 years later, I can still used it as a daily driver, even locking it to battery saver mode when unplugged and it doesn't feel sluggish.

On a whim, I looked into upgrading the screen on mine daily driver, and found a direct replacement for the standard WQHD screen I had in mine (low contrast, 60 hz) for a nice matte 120 hz display... and it's beautiful! So glad I did this - 120 hz really changes the overall reading / motion blur experience, reduced eyestrain, etc.

Here's the part number: TL140BDXP01-00 ASUS 2560*1440 EDP 40 Pins LCD Screen. It's from an Asus ROG Zephyrus g14 2021. It's a matte screen (yeah!), too.

Here's a Reddit thread I started with a bit more info: https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comme ... ?context=3

What about consumption / battery life?
X301: SU9600 | 8GB | 1TB | WXGA+
X1C9: 1185G7 | 32GB | 1TB | WUXGA | WWAN
X1Y8: 1365U | 32GB | 1TB | WUXGA
For the sake of ecology I donated all my classic Thinkpads.

Hasn't seemed to affect it much. Haven't measured it, but anecdotally it's not much difference. The OLED from a Carbon Gen 10, for example, you could almost watch the % go down in realtime.
