Dead Tablet Warranty Service?

#1 Post by schen » Wed Jul 18, 2012 5:28 pm

I've been back and forth with a seller who has a 1838-27U Tablet which won't power on. It's still under warranty till Nov. 23 though and I'm wondering whether Lenovo might repair it. Anyone with warranty repairs on tablets care to weigh in on this?

If it's under warranty - why wouldn't they repair it? Only if there is user damage you are not aware of.

Have the seller send it to them for repair, buy it after it's fixed.

It seems odd they wouldn't fix it before selling it if it's under warranty. It's worth more fixed.

Actually not as unusual as you'd think. I've seen it quite a bit here in the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex area where there's just a ton of IT surplus equipment floating around. The guy said that he acquire it in a "mixed lot" pallet of computer equipment, and looking at his list of For Sale items seems to bear this out with several tablets, some working some not.

Quite often, I've come across these guys like this who buy up this stuff on bid per pallet and just try to sell it off as quickly as possible to move on to the next thing. Anyway, I guess what I'll try to do is to come up with a price that I'm willing to bear the risk of getting it repaired myself. It looks like the warranty runs till late November so I'll have plenty of time to work on this.

It's been years since I warrantied a ThinkPad product, but it couldn't have been simpler! The tablet came with the original paperwork so I didn't even have to go find the number to call! Called them, answered a few questions; turns out the machine has depot service, so they are sending out a box tomorrow and off it goes to repairs.

It actually looks so new, "mint" doesn't even seem to be accurate, but it just won't power on. The power button causes it to do the little vibration indication, but that's all. No lights, nothing, even with the power plug in for a while.

Ok, it looks like the wait was worthwhile, as I sit here learning onscreen peck typing on the just delivered replacement. The original one sat waiting for a part for two weeks, which apparently was too long so EZ Serv got Lenovo to send me a new one

So now at long last I'm in the tablet world!

Well it's been a while since you got the tablet. Now that you have had some time to settle in with it, what are your thoughts and impressions?

Personally, I love mine and I use it everyday. 8)

I was disappointed until I spent time learning it and ICS. Obviously one of my main issues was that I had never owned an Android (or any) tablet until this one. It wasn't so much the learning curve, but it was me using it enough to figure out how it fit in my life.

At least for me, what I've decided is that it fits nicely as a "carry-around" device, that I can get on the web for a quick session to check something, or to read when I'm away from home: I have Zinio subscriptions as well as a variety of books and magazines in both Kindle and PDF format. I use it in bed a lot now instead of my X300 because it's more comfortable to hold. The IPS screen is much nicer for my aging eyes in a reclining and semi-reclining position. Of course, I'm kind of spoiled because my desktop is equipped with an L220x with an S-PVA panel, plus an L200p as well. LOVE being able resize/pinch-to-zoom, again for the old eyes.

What don't I like about it? I don't like doing any heavy web-work on it at all. I just don't think that the browsers are very good yet and pretty much can't stand the mobile versions of most items, especially eBay. I'd rather see the whole thing and zoom in as necessary. Don't like sending anything more than a short message on it. I've kind of gotten to dislike the Keyboard-Folio and don't use it at all. First of all, it makes it bulky and just about as heavy to carry around than the X300. Secondly, that floppy "adjustable" hinge makes it so it pretty much can't be used on anything but a solid surface. Thirdly, that "optical" TrackPoint is better than the devil's own touchpad, but not my much to an old dyed in the wool TrackPoint user like me.

In the end, I'm pretty happy with it and with my adaptation to Android in general. I've come to find a happy coexistence between it and my trusty X300 as I did between that and the big desktop workstation. Enough, so that I'll probably buy another one for my wife who keeps making remarks about it, BUT when offered to use it said: "No...it's your tablet".....
Which most any married man can translate into: I expect one as a present at the next suitable occasion! Actually I think you'll like it even more since, other than work, what she's on the computer for at home mostly is email and Facebook.

By the way; does anyone know what to make of this situation? I was told by EZ Serv that Lenovo would replace the unit (which they did), then email me a label and instructions to return the defective tablet, which they have not. It's now been close to 2 months. What should I do? :?
