All T430 screens compared *SMALL PICS*

#1 Post by kony » Thu Jul 17, 2014 4:37 pm

Here's all the data I've gathered so far. In short, supported HD+ displays seem to have worse viewing angles than HD ones, LG has inferior response time, colours are the best in LG then Samsung and the worst are in AUO. The best all-round display (except for the viewing angles) is the X1 Carbon's, however, it needs an additional cable and some people blew their motherboards or backlights trying to make it work in T430.

T430 HD+

A very nice addition are the tests made my the japanese website "the hikaku". They have tested all 3 displays used by Lenovo in T420(s)/T430(s):
- The LG display: http://translate.googleusercontent.com/ ... 1g#display
- The AUO display: http://translate.googleusercontent.com/ ... Dg#display
- The Samsung display: http://translate.googleusercontent.com/ ... Ow#display

Summary: They are all junk...often I have read about the Samsung being descriped as the least terrible, the LG seems to be plagued by the Screen-Door effect, and the AUO display is just bad in almost every way...their contrast ratio is also not 400:1 - its more like 170:1. If someone really wants or need a good screen - he should just buy a T440p or T440s.

The display used in the old X1 Carbon is not the one you listed - Lenovo used a much better LG display (also with the Screen-Door effect, but with good viewing angles and good contrast). Its model number is "LP140WD2-TLE2", FRU 04X1756, and also the only HD+ display ever used in the old X1 Carbon (see: http://download.lenovo.com/parts/ThinkP ... 140506.pdf Notice the "WV", its a Wide Viewing Display). The Innolux panel you listed isn´t even compatible with the old 2012 X1 Carbon or the T430, since its connected via eDP.

Thanks for corrections, indeed I made some mistakes. About that contrast ratio, yeah, the official statistics show 400:1 but the notebookcheck's review mention it only being 178:1 which is clearly much more accurate.

I'm thinking of changing my laptop's screen too, but I'm not sure whether it's worth it going from HD to HD+ and probably not getting a better image quality anyway (and worse viewing angles!). I'd go for X1 Carbon's display, but I'm a bit scared of damaging parts. I've waited with the purchase of T430 until T440(p) came out, but in the end I went with T430 because I do use trackpad a lot and as I don't do any graphic stuff I thought the screen wouldn't matter to me much... but I was wrong.

I have a hd+ on my x1 carbon and I really, totally hate this screen !
I don't understand how a screen of this quality ended up in a premium class machine.

The problem is the pixel grid. The pixels are so far from each other (or maybe its the technology used) that you always see the black grid. This is really annoying.
This is ironic, because I was always referring to the cheap low end laptops for this kind of pixel economy, now I've got it on the X1 that was over $2k.

At first I thought I'd get used to it, but it takes just a quick look to another screen and back to see the huge difference.

This is my personal opinion though. Eventually I gave up and gave it to my wife, and she didn't even notice anything :-|

In my T430 I have AUO HD display with eDP signal interface, can I replace it with LG HD+ with LVDS signal interface screen from T420 if I also replace the LCD cable? Or is there more to it?

I don´t think there are T430 with eDP displays - they started using this interface with the Haswell ThinkPad. So either your T430 screen is a LVDS screen - or they used a sort of adaptor to connect but, which I can´t believe.

You should be able to plug & play with the T420 HD+ screen.

Yeah, I got it wrong again. eDP are the newest series' connectors, so I could only wish I had that connector in my T430  I could connect an actually good display to it. I got the info from the link I gave to that screen, but either I linked to a wrong screen or they made a mistake on the site, but I can't find out, there isn't enough information I can find on the internet. Anyway, thanks! I think I will go with that LG display.

During a repair I have seen Samsung and AUO screens side by side for the T430 (1600x900)
I vastly preferred the AUO in the flesh, seems fuller in color and less screen door.

I have not seen the LG in person, but I would not recommend Samsung over AUO. In fact I switched over from Samsung as my replacement looked washed out and "thin" compared to my old T430 (AUO).

Before T430 I had T420 with horrendous screen door, I believe it was AOU as well. So T420 screen appearance bears no relevance for T430.
