Thinkpad X230 Tablet - No video after coffee spill

#1 Post by zogthegreat » Thu Jul 07, 2016 9:46 am

Hi everyone!

I have a Thinkpad X230 Tablet that I just dumped coffee on! I immediately pulled the battery and power cord and then striped down the laptop and started cleaning it with rubbing alcohol, (I used rubbing alcohol because it evaporates quickly). I waited a couple of hours and reassembled everything and it seemed that everything was OK. The next day, the mouse started to act erratically and I noticed some coffee leaking down from the LCD onto the hing. I shut it down again and took apart the LCD and cleaned it out and reassembled everything.

Now when I hit the power button, the lights come on, the CPU fan spins up but I don't have any video.

Does anyone have any suggestions what the problem could be?

Thanks!

-Hm first things first, does it work when you connect an external video? Some monitor?
-Second guess is: since it was working before you disassembled the LCD, perhaps you need to reseat the lcd connector on the mainboard?
-Third thing: erratic mouse behaviour - perhaps you got some cofee into the usb ports?

Hi evening_hunger,

I tried hooking up an external monitor, but I don't get anything from it. I'm not sure if the board will default to external monitor without hitting a combination of buttons, (I did try FN + projector but no image)

I've tried that a couple of times with no results, along with disconnecting and reconnecting the cable from the LCD.

I might have, but as I said in the first post, I really did clean the motherboard and components really well with a mixture of compressed air and rubbing alcohol, (although apparently not well enough! ).

The strange part is the coffee coming down the hinge, the coffee spilt on the keyboard/back portion of the system not on the lid.

Perhaps coffee penetrated into the lcd assembly along the keyboard drains. I don't have any practice with the x230 tablet, perhaps some more experienced gentelmen here:)
But a priori it may be that in the tablet, much more electronics is contained in the lcd assembly. Therefore, cofee shortcircuted something there...

Does it boot into the OS? Does CapsLock work?
