1440 x 900 Or 1600 x 900 Displays Compatible For X230 (And Future Plans With X230)

#1 Post by TheMagicT410 » Sat Feb 18, 2017 10:02 pm

Hey All,

So ive been wondering if its possible to swap out my old 1366 x 768 Panel with something like a 1440 x 900 (Had that with my T410
heck even a 1600 x 900 panel. yes i am fully aware of these mods you can do which allows you to use a 1080p ips display and to be honest i dont really want to do it to my main machine i love dearly. they can cost alot for the kit then the display + the chance of screwing up your mobo.

i know that beyond T440 and X240 they gave an option for a FHD Display (1080p) but for us users with a T430 - X230 or below we are stuck with these low res panels :(

so what im thinking is that i know apparently you are able to swap out your old panel which might of been a 1366 x 768 display in a T430 to something like a 1600 x 900 panel which was an option when you bought it brand new back in 2012.
so what i am thinking is a possible switch that allows you to fit a 1440 x 900 - 1600 x 900 panel in the x230. im not too sure if its even possible to be honest im just wondering and would consider doing it as i dont like my screen with its low resolution and non ips feature.

i would like to do this but not break the bank (well im 15 after all im not loaded) is have preferably a 1440 x 900 panel installed in my x230 successfully with no additional modding required i.e soldering. ive allready just spent £40 for a brand new oem 44+ battery almost 2 weeks ago adding the total cost for the machine £240. i dont want to spend a fortune for a small upgrade like this (please take that in mind)

Now The Future Proofing (And Repairing)

if i can get this done then i can then look into getting a backlit keyboard (has to be US Style i absolutely love it better than uk one)
get a new palm rest as part of it snapped off at bottom left corner. (or i can see if i can do a miracle and glue the piece back together)
Get new bezel and new lid. (top left part of lid were the long black stripe is has gotten very loose and is hard to fix) top corners of the bezel have snapped of (apparently common for x230's for some daft reason)
finally get a usb 3.0 express card
Get a 240Gb Msata ssd (want it the same capacity as my SSD, Blame my ocd) but this will remove the mobile data card that came with it.
i know this seems alot and im willing to do it im going to have this laptop for a additional 2 years so better give it a good chance when it comes to "future proofing" my x230

im sorry if this was a strange post just wanted to see if swapping the screen for something slightly better is possible.

For future reference of information on this forum it would be nice if posts were posted in the correct section.

A quick search at panelook.com yields 0 results for a 12.5 inch LCD panel with 1600x900 resolution. The only 12.1 inch 1440x900 panel I know is the one on the X200/200s, and that wasn't a great display.

End of story?

You can forget about a 1440/1600 x 900 screen for X220/X230, does not exist.
Unless you get a HD IPS panel, or do nitrocaster's FHD mod, there are no alternatives.

If it almost needs a new "body", you must have either gotten a rather crappy X230, or you have two left hands.
The X230 already has two USB3.0 and one USB2.0 ports.
If you want an mSATA drive, 128 or 256 GB is enough for the OS.
The regular drive could then be replaced with up to 2TB storage (e.g. Seagate Firecuda).
You're talking about another 200 Pounds or so.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

Thanks for the swift reply axur-delmeria and RealBlackStuff!

its not the news i wanted to here but it seems i will have to possibly go for nitrocasters mod or just get a ips 1366 x 768 display im not too sure as im worried i will destroy the bored.
with the mention about it needing a almost new body i understand what you mean. i was just disapontied that it came in pretty rough shape for how much i paid for it. i like to have my machines in great condition and in the photos it looks very good (seller might of used other images of X230's he had in stock)
ive recently glued part of the top lid which made it more stronger just a shame i got glue residue on it leading to a bad finish.
the usb ports are a very nice addition which are very speedy (i dont use the 2.0 one as its slower)
to be honest the bezel looks to be in really good shape just dont like why the corner pieces have snapped off (its hard to see anyway)

so what i might do instead is get the palmrest replaced as thats warn and cracked, possibly get the nitrocaster mod (but get someone else to do it i dont have the required tools needed) buy the 1080p pannel for it then do a full tear down of the lid and get that fixed to a high finish state.

Thanks for the reply's so far :)
