W500 XP going to ESXi with XP inside VM

#1 Post by SharonA » Sat Sep 13, 2014 9:46 am

Current setup: W500 running XP, 3GB RAM, purchased new years ago as a downgrade-from-Vista option

Desired setup: ESXi, and run XP from inside a VM, on 8GB RAM

I found a thread from May where someone is asking about the licensing issues in doing this, but no resolution.

The machine is not my primary box. It will be for farting around, experimenting, making and trashing VMs for various things. It will also be "the box that I can run XP things on if I need to".

Has anyone here done this, and if so, do you have any advice, gotchas, etc?

Thanks.

The Penryn architecture of the Core2 processors lacks the capability, introduced with Nehalem architecture, to virtualize 3D graphics. This means that your XP virtual machine would be limited to 2D graphics.

Thanks for the gotcha. I'll try to remember that when something doesn't work :)
