Greetings,

I have a T40p onto which I've recently done a clean install from the restore CDs. One thing I can't seem to get working is creating an Access Connections (AC) Location Profile (LP) -- something I used quite extensively before the reinstall. The below symptoms occured with the previous version (don't remember what it is) and the current (4.12) version of AC:

1. Open AC

2. Under LP tab, click Create (I don't currently have any locations saved as the app has only ever crashed since the reinstall)

3. Enter in Name of location profile and hit next (I've tried monkeying with the other options on the screen, such as leaving both of my network cards checked or only checking one of them -- same result)

4. Type in SSID (or use Find Network -- same result)/configure rest of wireless settings if wireless card was checked at #3 above. Hit next

5. Watch AC GUI crash. "ThinkVantage Access Connections Main GUI Application has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

I'm not sure where to go from here -- I'm running the most recent version of AC when this happens. (It also happened with the previous version.)

Has anyone else had this problem?

Yup, same here, for a long-long time now. Reinstalling it doesn't help either.

They haven't released any updates in a long time now, so I'm/we're still forced to copy an old profile and modify it, instead of starting from scratch.

I've got a NeStumbler v0.4 install here, and as far as I've used it, I've never seen any features that are similar to Access Connections other than the AP scan. Former is a wardriving tool, latter for configuration. I didn't see any such (new) features listed on their page either.

Should probably just switch to Linux on my Thinkpad too, at least the corporate certificate checking security issue of AC could be avoided by Linux's alternatives.

I apologize, in my haste to contribute something useful I mentioned the wrong program.
I intended this one: SwitchNetConfig

You need to sign up before you can DL (free)

Oh, well, seems I should update to that awful (was so the last time I tried) System Update, as the Software Installer appears to hide updates from me. Thanks for reminding.

Just tried both -- System Update is still a horrible bloated .NET app with added bloated services that also decides to crash without any intelligent message when updating, and AC goes the same path with acon.dll trying to access memory at 0x00000014 when adding a new profile. Thumbs up for bad software!
Software Installer at least runs, just seems to miss updates.

Seems like a nice indie-soft for basing something with more-features on, but I'd like some Wi-Fi related functions, especially for WPA auth.

Forgive my ignorance, but I've never fully understood the point of using Access Connections. Personally, I've always found it easier to show the wireless networks available and connect to the one that is mine. Works perfectly.

For the occasional DHCP with open-networks Wireless Zero Config is okay, but Windows XP doesn't support all those different 802.11x authentication methods that I use, and so I'm forced to extend Windows' defaults.
And in the spirit of Mutt's author -- all software sucks, some just suck less :-)

I've got a T41 with Windows XP Pro.
I had the exact same problem as the #1 post in this subject.
I finally got it to work by 1st; going to control panel;network & Internet connections;network connections;right click "wireless network connection";click properties;click the tab "wireless network";then make very sure that "use windows to configure my wireless network settings" is UNCHECKED;then press "ok" to close the window.
I then clicked the "Access Connections Wireless LAN Adapter" icon in the right lower corner that brings up my "wireless connection status".
It's the icon with green vertical bars in it.From there I click on the button "Find WLAN..." Then it finds the connections in my area;I click to choose one;then click "connect".It asks me if I want to create a profile & I say YES.---I said yes to my own home wifi router.
I hope this helps somebody.
Best wishes,

Just log in as Administrator and it works!! Found this out quite by accident. Could be wrong, but I could have sworn it worked as a user with admin privs for me before <shrug>
